What is Explanation text?
 Explanation is a text which tells processes relating to forming of n
atural, social, scientific and cultural phenomena.
Purpose of Explanation text
 To explain the process relating to forming of natural, social, scientific and cultural phe
nomena.
 To explain how or why something happens
Generic Structure of Explanation text:
  General Statement
Contains general information about the topic to be discussed in the text.
 Explanation
Contains a sequences of events of a process about the topic of the text. We
can also explain using the question why and how, so the explanation is mor
e comprehensive.
 Closing
The closing part is optional. This part can contain additional information or
the author's opinion on the topic discussed.
The characteristics of Explanation Text
 Using Simple Present Tense
This text uses Simple Present Tense because this text explains about the facts.
 Using Action Verbs
Action Verbs are verbs used to describe an action that is taking place. Examples are do, ma
ke, create, and so on.
 Using Technical Terms
These technical terms refer to technical terms related to the topics discussed in this text.
 Contains an explanation of the process
The characteristics of Explanation Text
 Explanation text is usually from questions related to 'why' and 'how' to an existing phe
nomenon.
 Because the main focus is a phenomenon, the focus of the material is not on the objec
t or person, but the main focus is to the process how it happened.
 Using Simple Present Tense.
Example:
How Earthquakes Happen
 Earthquake is one of the most destroying natural disasters. Unluckily it often happens in severa
l regions. Recently a horrible earthquake has shaken Palu city. It has brought great damages.
Why did it occur? Do you know how an earthquake happens?
 Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This su
dden release of energy causes the seismic waves. It make the ground shake. When two blocks
of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. They don’t just slide sm
oothly. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving. After a while, the rocks
break because of all the pressure that’s built up. When the rocks break, the earthquake occurs.
 During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they conti
nue to move until they get stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks is called t
he focus of the earthquake. The place right above the focus is called the epicenter of the earth
quake.
