Two Port Network

This document discusses two-port networks and different parameter sets used to characterize them. A two-port network has two ports for input and output. There are three common parameter sets: impedance parameters (z-parameters), admittance parameters (y-parameters), and hybrid parameters (h-parameters). The z-parameters define the network in terms of input and output impedances. The y-parameters define it in terms of input and output admittances. The h-parameters are used when the z-parameters and y-parameters do not exist. Each parameter set can be represented by a matrix equation and the individual parameters are found by manipulating the ports in specific ways. Examples are also provided to demonstrate calculating the parameter values

CHAPTER 19

TWO PORT NETWORK

INTRODUCTION
 A two-port network is an electrical network with two
separate ports for input and output.
 A two-port network has two terminal pairs acting as
access points
 Three-terminal devices such as transistors can be
configured into two-port networks.
 such networks are useful in communications, control
systems, power systems, and electronics
 Knowing the parameters of a two-port network enables
us to treat it as a “black box” when embedded within a
larger network
 Using the 4 parameters of V1,V2,I1 and I2 we can derive
separate sets of these parameters
 Such as
Impedance parameter
Admittance parameter
Hybrid parameter
IMPEDANCE PARAMETER
 Impedance parameters are commonly used in the
synthesis of filters
 They are also useful in the design and analysis of
impedance-matching networks and power distribution
networks
 The z parameter or the impedance parameter can be
written in matrix form as

 From which we can derive the equation

 Z parameter have the unit of ohms
 From the above equations we can say that

 we find z11 when port 2 is open circuit

 we find z12 when port 1 is open circuit

 we find z21 when port 2 is open circuit

 we find z22 when port 1 is open circuit

EXAMPLE
 Find the z parameter of the circuit
ADMITTANCE PARAMETER
 Similar to impedance parameter admittance parameters
are also used in the synthesis of filters
 Admittance parameter can also be written as y parameter

 Using the parameters of V1,V2,I1 and I2 we can derive

the 2 equations

 From which we can derive the matrix

 From the above matric and equation we can say

 we find y11 by shorting port 2

 we find y12 by shorting port 1

 we find y21 by shorting port 2

 we find y22 by shorting port 1

EXAMPLE
HYBRID PARAMETERS
 There are times when the z and y parameters of a two-
port network do not exist
 For time like these we derive another set of parameters
called the hybrid parameters / h-parameters
 This set of parameters is based on making V1and I2 the

dependent variables. Thus, we obtain

 Which can be written in matrix form as

 From this we can find the following

 to find h11 we short the port 2

 to find h12 we make an open circuit at pot 1

 to find h21 we short the port 2

 to find h22 we make an open circuit at pot 1
