Comparing and Ordering Decimals

To compare decimals: 1. Compare the whole number parts from left to right. The greater whole number is the greater decimal. 2. If the whole numbers are equal, compare the decimal parts starting from the tenths place to the right. The decimal with the greater digit value in a place is the greater decimal. 3. When comparing decimals with a different number of decimal places, add zeros to equalize the numbers of places before comparing.

Comparing

and Ordering
Decimals
• To compare decimals, begin by comparing the
whole number parts and then the decimal parts.
• The decimal number with the greater whole
number part is the greater number.
• If the whole number parts are the same, compare
the decimal parts starting at the tenths place
going to the right. The decimal whose digit has
greater value in a corresponding place is the
greater decimal.
• Use symbols <, >, or = to compare any two
decimals.
• Symbols < and > are read as “is less than” and
“is greater than,” respectively.
• When comparing or arranging decimals with
different number of decimal places, first put
zeros as placeholders before you compare
the digits in each place value position.
Example 1.
a. Compare 8 152.36 and 8 125.63
Compare the whole number parts. 8 152 is greater than 8 125.
8 152.36 > 8 125.63
b. Compare 85.12 and 85.21
Since the whole number parts are the same, compare the decimal
parts by starting from the tenths place going to the right.

85.12
85.21
The digits in the tenths place are 1 and 2. Since 1 < 2, then
85.12 < 85.21
Example 1.
c. Which is less, 0.06 or 0.6?
Arrange the given decimals by aligning the decimal point. Add
zeros to the end of the number such that the number of decimal
places will be the same.

0.06 = 0. 0 6
0.6 = 0. 6 0
Six hundredths is less than sixty hundredths. So,

0.06 < 0.6

Example 1.
c. Compare 0.7 and 0. 70

0.7 = 0.70
0.70 = 0.70

0.7 = 0.70
Example 2.
Write the correct symbol > , = , or < in each blank to make a true
statement.
1. 35.045 > 4.986
2. 0.7412 < 0.743
3. 8.213 < 83.2008
4. 56.9 > 0.3215
5. 0.2108 < 1.005
6. five and three hundredths < 6.1
7. Seventy-six thousandths > 0.12
8. Nine and three hundredths > 8.05
9. Twenty-three tenths < 2.3
10.Thirty-four thousandths = 0.0340
Example 3.
a. Arrange 0.47, 0.413, 0.43, and 0.468 in increasing order.
Arrange the given numbers such that the decimal points are
aligned. Add zeros so that all the given decimals will have the same
number of decimal places. Compare by starting at the tenths place
going to the right. Then, arrange the numbers from least to greatest.
0.47 = 0. 4 7 0
0.413 = 0. 4 1 3
0.43 = 0. 4 3 0
0.468 = 0. 4 6 8
Increasing order: 0.413 , 0.43, 0.468 , 0.47
Example 3.
b. Arrange 2.15, 2.51, 0.25, and 0.5 in decreasing order.
2.15 = 2. 1 5
2.51 = 2. 5 1
0.25 = 0. 2 5
0.5 = 0. 5 0
Decreasing order: 2.51 , 2.15, 0.5 , 0.25
Example 4.
Arrange these decimals in ascending order.
1. 0.143 , 0.354 , 0.4 , 0.034

0.034 , 0.143 , 0.354 , 0.4

2. 5.67 , 5.086 , 5.9 , 5.6314 , 5.4

5.068 , 5.4 , 5.6314 , 5.67 , 5.9

Example 5.
Arrange these decimals in descending order.
1. 0.456 , 0.48 , 0.418 , 0.4

0.48 , 0.456 , 0.418 , 0.4

2. 2.09 , 2.087 , 2.9 , 2.16 , 2.061

2.9 , 2.16 , 2.09 , 2.087
