Laboratory Equipment: Prepared By: Omeed S.Saadi Msc. Animal Production

This document provides an overview of laboratory equipment used in microbiology. It describes common tools like microscopes, which are used to view small organisms, and autoclaves, which use steam to sterilize equipment at high temperatures. Other equipment mentioned includes incubators to provide optimal growth temperatures, colony counters to count bacterial colonies, and centrifuges to separate substances by density. Additional pieces of standard lab equipment discussed are Bunsen burners, refrigerators, water baths, balances, hot plates, sterile hoods, inoculating loops, petri dishes, and various glassware.

Microbiology
is Fun!
What is Microbiology?

Micro - too small

Bio - life
logy - study of

(The science that studies micro organisms)

Organisms included in the study of
Microbiology

Bacteria
Algae
Fungi
Viruses
What Is a Laboratory?
A laboratory is a room or a place equipped for the
performance of tests and experimentation.
Lab equipment
Equipment refers to the various tools used by scientists
working in a laboratory.
Microscope
Is an optical instrument consisting of a combination of lenses
which magnifies the image of the object seen through it.It is
used for the morphological study of a very small organisms
which are not visible by naked eye.

Autoclave

An autoclave is a pressure chamber used to sterilize equipment

with steam to a very high temperature at (121 °C for around 15–20
minutes)
 Hot Air oven: Require 2 hours at 160_180 C° for
sterilization. We can used for sterilize for glassware.

Direct Flaming: Used to sterilize inoculating loop ,

tube and needles.
Incubator
Provide optimum temperature for microorganisms to grow.
good temperature for most bacteria is About 35ºc and a
good temperature for most fungi is 25°c.
Colony counter
Used to count the number of individuals colonies
on an agar plates.
Centrifuge
is an apparatus that rotates at high speed and separates
substances of different densities.
Bunsen burner
Sterilize loops and needles, test tube mouth
Refrigerator
Storing / preserving culture media and survival rate for
microorganisms.
Water bath
Used for heating and melting of media also be used to
maintain constant temperature that is required in
microbiology lab work.
Balance
used to measure an object’s mass.
hot plate / stir plate
used to heat and stir substances. Magnetic stirring bars.
Hood
Sometimes provide with UV lamp.
A sterile chamber for transferring and culturing of
microorganisms.
Inoculatingloops
are used to transfer microorganisms to
growth media or for staining slides.
Petri dish

A petri dish is a flat dish made of plastic or glass with a

cover that is used to grow bacteria and other
microorganism.
