HAZARDOUS MATERIALS HANDLING

TRAINING OF TRAINERS
CONTENT
 Objective
 Hazardous Material

 Classification of hazardous material

 Type of labels

 Hazmat kit contents

 Spillage management

 Examples for spillage magangment

OBJECTIVE

 Allow response personnel to prepare for and safely

respond to spill incidents.
 Ensure an effective and efficient response despite
geographical challenges.
 To reduce the quantity of ...spills/releases is required and
must be recorded through the appropriate procedures and
reported to relevant authorities.
WHAT ARE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS?
 Hazardous material can be defined as any material that,
because of its quantity, concentration, or physical or
chemical characteristics, may pose a real hazard to
human health or the environment.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS & WASTES

Knowledge of the proper

procedures in the special
handling, use, storage, and
disposal of hazardous
materials (hazmats) and
wastes.
TYPES OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS
 Class 1- Explosives e.g. Nitroglycerine
 Class 2- Gases e.g. Compressed gases
 Class 3- Flammable Liquids e.g. Isopropyl alcohol
 Class 4- Flammable Solids e.g.Phosphorus
 Class 5- Oxidizers and Organic Peroxide e.g.
Hydrogen peroxide
 Class 6- Toxic and Infectious Substances
e.g.Chemo drugs & body fluids
 Class 7- Radioactive Materials
 Class 8- Corrosives e.g. Acids
 Class 9- Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods.
INCIDENT
 HAZMAT is a term used to describe incidents
involving hazardous materials or specialized teams
who deal with these incidents.
LABELS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE:

 Pictograms
 Signal Words
 Hazard Statement
 Precautionary Statements
 Product Identifier
 Supplier Identification
 Supplemental Information (as required)
GHS PICTOGRAMS
LABELS – SIGNAL WORDS DESCRIBE
THE SEVERITY OF A HAZARD

 Danger
 This is reserved for the more severe hazards

 Warning
 This is used on less severe hazards

 If there is no significant hazard, a signal word won’t be used

LABELS – HAZARD STATEMENTS
Phrases that describe the
nature of the hazard:

 Examples:
 Highly flammable liquid
and vapor
 May cause liver and

kidney damage
 Fatal if swallowed
KNOW THE POTENTIAL HAZARDS
 Ineach area of the
facility where you work:
 Observe signs
 Take precautions when
entering an area identified
as hazardous
 Know what’s inside a
container before you
handle it!
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE
EQUIPMENT (PPE)
 Gloves

 Goggles

 Masks

 Respirator

 Gowns

 Aprons

 Footwear

 Good hygiene
WHAT IS HAZMAT KIT/SPILL KIT
 Spill kits with instructions, absorbents, neutralizing agents if
applicable, protective equipment, and sealable waste bags
should be present in the workplace.
 Refer to the chemical Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for
specific guidance on the chemical hazards and spill clean up.
CONTENTS OF SPILL KIT

1. Gloves
2. Disposable gowns
3. Goggles
4. Disposable shoe cover
5. Disinfectant(10% hypo solution)
6. Absorbent papers
7. Disposable forceps
8. Biohazard Disposable bags
9. Glass bottle(for mercury spill)
10.Card board or x-ray film
IN CASE OF SMALL SPILLS

• Isolate the spill and evacuate the

surrounding area
• Assign responsibility for dealing
with the spill – this must be someone
who has had appropriate training in
the use of spill kits and dealing with
chemical spills
• Put on PPE
• If possible, stop the source of the
spill
• Contain and clean up the spill,
thoroughly disinfect, rinse and dry the
area.
• Report the spill
IN CASE OF LARGE SPILLS
•Isolate the spill and evacuate the area
• Assign responsibility for dealing with the
spill - again, this must be someone who has
had appropriate training in the use of spill kits
and dealing with chemical spills
• Consult the Materials Safety Data Sheet
(MSDS) for advice on dealing with the type of
spill that has occurred.
• Put on PPE
• If possible and safe to do so, stop the source
of the spill
• Contain and cover the spill, using the
appropriate absorbent materials or granules.
• Dispose of the granules in the correct
container and manner for the product in
question
• Report the spill
BE SURE TO WASH YOUR HANDS
Before entering or leaving the work area
Before and after contact with a patient

After handling items such as bedpans, dressings, etc.

After removing gloves
After using the toilet, blowing your nose or covering a
sneeze
Before eating, drinking or handling food or smoking
PREVENT INJURIES FROM
SHARPS
 Let falling objects fall
 Practice safe handling
techniques
 Don’t reach into containers

 Dispose of sharps carefully

HAZMAT FUNCTIONING
 HAZMAT to be available round the clock for cleaning
up large spills of hazardous materials.
 Hazmat Register to be maintained in the Engineering
Control Room in which the details of the incident be
mentioned.
 Hazmat to reach the site with appropriate Personal
Protective Equipment and Absorbents and Containers to
control the situation.
HANDLING HAZMAT SPILLS
 Contaminated waste to be placed in a black bag with proper
labeling i.e.
 Name of the Substance:
 Date & Time of Incident:
 Unit / Area:
 Quantity of Spill:
 Signature: and to be sent to Central Waste Disposal area (Backyard.)

 Hazardous Chemicals will be diluted and flushed through the

drain.
 Other Hazardous material will be handed over to an outside
agency for disposal.
 HAZMAT register and Spill report form to be filled up and sent
to the Chairperson Safety Committee.
TYPES OF SPILL OCCUR IN THE
HOSPITAL
 Blood Spill/ Body Fluid Spill
 Chemical Spill

 Mercury Spill

 Medical gas spill

PERSONAL EXPOSURE – SKIN SPLASHES
 Remove all contaminated clothing.
 Rinse the affected area with water for approximately 15
minutes. Use an Emergency Shower if available.
 Gently dry the area.

 Seek medical attention from Emergency Department.

 Complete an Incident Form and provide to the

supervisor.
PERSONAL EXPOSURE – EYE SPLASHES
 Immediately flush the eye(s) with a continuous flow of
water for at least 15 minutes. Do not rub.
 Seek medical attention from the Emergency Department.

 Complete an Employee Incident Form and provide to the

supervisor
HAZMAT TRAINING
 Mandatory for all staff
 Hazmat team to ensure training of all staff
HAZMAT RESPONSIBILITIES
 Obtain, review, and make available Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for the materials present at the work site.
 Ensure that sufficient quantities and appropriate types of spill
control materials, as prescribed in MSDS, are available to contain
and clean up a minor spill.
 Ensure that any required personal protective equipment (e.g.
eyewear or gloves) is available.
 Ensure that spill control materials are located in a readily
accessible location.
 Record information regarding any spills using the Spill Report
Form. Completed forms must be submitted to the Chairperson
Safety Committee.
 Investigate the causes of minor spills and ensure appropriate
follow-up is conducted.
STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

hazards and the use of appropriate personal protective
equipment.
 Ensure proper reporting procedures are followed in the
event of a spill.

MANAGING SPILLS
 Mercury Spills - Minor
 User is responsible for clean up of the spill.

 Wear gloves. Clean up broken glass using tongs or heavy towel.
