VOICE

The quality of the verb that tells whether


the subject is the doer or the receiver of
the action.
Types of Voice
1. ACTIVE VOICE
2. PASSIVE VOICE
Active Voice
• When the subject does or ’acts upon’ the verb,
the sentence is said to be in the active voice.
Formula: Subject + Verb + Object
Formula: Actor + Verb + Target
1. Carlos Bulosan (subject) revealed (verb) the reality
about social discrimination in the text (object).
2. The teacher (subject) teaches (verb) the students
(object).
3. The boy (subject) kicked (verb) the ball (object).
Passive Voice
•When the subject receives the action of the
verb.
Formula: Subject + Verb + Object
Formula: Target + Verb + Actor
1. The reality about social discrimination in the text (subject)
was revealed (verb) by Carlos Bulosan (object).
2. The students (subject) are taught (verb) by the teacher
(object).
3. The ball (subject) was kicked (verb) by the boy (object).
Formula in changing active voice to passive voice

Object + ‘’to be’’ + Past Participle + by + Subject


Target + ‘’to be’’ + Past Participle + by + Actor
1. Active: The government gives relief goods.
Passive: Relief goods are given by the government.
2. Active: Many boys helped the wounded men.
Passive: Wounded men were helped by many boys.
3. Active: Someone will take my gadgets.
Passive: My gadgets will be taken by someone.
