USED TO/BE USED

TO/GET USED TO
USED TO + INF = Past habits
We use used to + verb in the infinitive:
1. to talk about things we did in the past that we don’t do now
• I used to go to school by bus
• He used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day, now only 5

2. to talk about past situations


• She used to have brown hair now it’s red
• They used to live in London when they were in the UK
WOULD + INF = Past habits
• We use would + verb in the infinitive:
1. to talk about things we did in the past that we don’t do now
• My grandfather would always watch the football on tv on Saturdays
• After school I would often buy sweets at the village shop

2. We can’t use would + inf to talk about past situations


• They would live in London They used to live in London
• She would be fat She used to be fat
BE USED TO + ING = To be accustomed to
We use be used to + verb in the ing form:
1. to talk about actions that are usual, normal, routine for us
• He’s used to getting up early because he starts work at 6am
• When I was in the Uk I wasn’t used to drinking so much tea

2. We use be used to + noun to talk about things that are normal or


not a problem for us
• He lives in Alaska so he’s used to the snow
GET USED TO + ING = To become
accustomed to
We use get used to + ing form:
1. to talk about actions that were not usual or routine in the past but
have become so
• I’ve started a new job so I have to get used to getting up early
• With Covid-19 we’ve all had to get used to working from home

2. We use get used to + noun to talk about things that have become
normal or not a problem
• I just couldn’t get used to the rain when I lived in the Uk
