Lecture 5 - Distance Measuring DME

DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) is a navigation system that measures the distance of an aircraft from terrestrial radio transmitters. It consists of antennas on the aircraft and ground transmitters. DME transmits signals between the aircraft and ground station to calculate the distance in nautical miles using the time of flight. Pilots can see the DME distance readout in the cockpit. DME is accurate and provides continuous distance measurements to aid aircraft navigation.

Lecture 5:

Distance
Measuring
Equipment (DME)

By Zuliana Ismail, 2010

Definition

Home
• DME is stand for Distance Measuring
Previous Equipment.
Next
• DME is a type of en-route navigation system
for aircraft.
Help

• DME often installed near VOR stations so as to

provide combined bearing and distance.
• When DME is installed with the VOR, it is
referred to as a VOR/DME.
The uses of DME

Home
• DME provides the physical distance from the
Previous aircraft to the ground DME antenna expressed
in Nautical Miles (NM).
Next

• DME also calculates ground speed and the time

How DME works?
Home
• Ground DME antenna sent out signal to Aircraft’s
DME antenna
Previous
• . Aircraft’s DME antenna receive and respond back
Next the signal.
Help
• The system operates in the ultra-high frequency
(UHF).
• DME receiver inside the cockpit then measures the
distance from the aircraft to the ground DME
antenna.
• Then, the computed distance is displayed through
DME indicator in the cockpit.
How DME works?
Home • The distance formula is also used by the DME receiver
Previous
to calculate the distance from DME station in Nautical
Miles.
Next
• Distance formula=theorem Pythagoras

Advantages of DME

equipment should be capable of handling 100
to 200 aircrafts.
• Large coverage: DME facility provides coverage
up to 200 NM.
