MKV Fenne: Pit Navigator Control of Secondary Air Control at

The PiT Navigator software system from Powitec controls secondary air distribution at various plants to optimize combustion processes. At the MKV Fenne plant, it reduced excess air from 1.28 to 1.15, saving on coal and flue gas handling costs. Plant operators confirmed that PiT Navigator met expectations and improved flexibility. It has also increased boiler efficiency by 0.3% at the Tiefstack plant in Hamburg and reduced unburned carbon in ash by 0.8-1.2% at the Seocheon plant in South Korea.

Results in the plant MKV Fenne

Since summer 2005 the following optimisation targets

was reached and are used for the payment to Powitec:
- Optimisation lambda, from 1,28 down to 1,15
Additonal process performance:
- Reduced slagging on the burner mouth /
optimised boiler availability
- Increased flexibility in charge of used coal types /
larger coal band
Dirk Kiehn, Production Manager:
“Steag Saarenergie confirms that the PiT Navigator
reaches their expectations and is very satisfied with the
system performance and benefits.
The Powitec system is flexible and very easy to use and
our operators have high confidence in it!”

Target at Fenne plant, Germany
Target Prio 1:
- Lambda: n 1,28 -> 1,15

First basis for Performance Reduction of excess air from 1,25 to 1,24 means:
Contracting payment  Reduction of flue gas amount (198 kg/sec)
Quality function Lambda: of 1,6 kg/sec
This 1,6 kg/sec must be not upheated any
more around 150°C
30 €/h

 Reduction 289 kJ/sec

 Considering a coal with CV=29,3 MJ/kg, means
a reduction of 36 kg coal/h
 Considering a coal price of 50 €/t this finalises
in 1,80 €/h less costs!

Seocheon Thermal Power Plant Unit 1 & 2

2 x 215 MW units, Anthracite coal, Base-load

Seocheon Thermal Power Plant, was the first

power plant which was constructed to use the
low-grade high ash (50%) domestic coal. It is
operated by Korean Midland Power Ltd (Kepco).

The capacity is 400,000 kW (200,000 kW x 2). Plant #1

was completed in 1983; and Plant #2 in 1983 by
DOOSAN, Retrofit 2004/2005 (both units) by
FW/ABB.

PiT Navigator controls the combustion air

distribution per windbox (4pcs.) since May 2005
with 4 cameras per boiler with 40 burners.

Result: 0,8% (TPP1) and 1,2% (TPP2) less of

unburned carbon in ash
