Lesson 2 3 Purposive Comm

The document discusses globalization and its impacts on communication. Globalization has led to increased interaction and integration among people worldwide. It has also led to virtual interaction and the need for cultural awareness in both speech and body language due to differences in cultures and time zones. Effective global communication requires understanding of other cultures, being open-minded, and considering language differences. Miscommunication can occur due to assumptions of cultural similarities, language barriers, and misinterpreting nonverbal cues from different cultural perspectives.

LESSON 4:
LOCAL AND GLOBAL
COMMUNICATION IN
MULTICULTURAL
SETTINGS
What is the
meaning of this
hand gesture?
LOCAL
COMMUNICATION
• Local communication is being able to communicate with
the members of your local area. It can either be in
your local language (mother tongue), or a common
language that you speak within your town.
GLOBAL COMMUNICATION

• Global communication is the term used to describe

ways to connect, share, relate and mobilize across
geographic, political, economic, social and cultural
divides.
WHAT’S THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
MULTICULTURAL,
INTERCULTURAL AND
CROSS-CULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
MULTICULTURAL
• Multicultural refers to a society that contains
several cultural or ethnic groups. People live
alongside one another, but each cultural group
does not necessarily have engaging interactions
with each other.
INTERCULTURAL

• Intercultural describes communities in which

there is a deep understanding and respect for
all cultures.
INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION

• Refers to interaction with people from diverse

culture
FORMS OF
INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION
(JANDT,1998)
• Interracial Communication- communicating with
people from different races
Interethnic Communication- communicating with
people of different ethnic origin.
FORMS OF INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION (JANDT,1998)
• International Communication- communicating
between representatives from different nations.
• Intracultural Communication- interacting with
members of the same racial or ethnic group or co-
culture
COMMUNICATION STYLE AMONG
CULTURES DIFFERS:
• HIGH CONTEXT COMM.
- Is a tradition-linked communication system
which adheres strongly to being indirect.
• LOW-CONTEXT COMM.
- A system that works on straightforward
communication.
HOW TO IMPROVE INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE?
• Recognize the validity and differences o f
communication styles among people
• Learn to eliminate personal biases and prejudices
• Strive to acquire communication skills necessary
in a multicultural world
CROSS-CULTURAL
• Cross-cultural deals with the comparison of
different cultures. In cross-cultural
communication, differences are understood and
acknowledged, and can bring about individual
change, but not collective transformations.
SOURCES OF MISCOMMUNICATION IN
CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGES
1) Assumption of similarities :
This refers to our tendency to think how
we behave and act is the universally
accepted rule of behavior. When someone
differs, we have a negative view of them
• 2) Language Differences :
Problems occur when there is an inability to
understand what the other is saying because
different languages are being spoken.  Talking the
same language itself can sometimes lead to
discrepancies as some words have different
meanings in various contexts, countries or cultures
• 3) Nonverbal Misinterpretation :
The way we dress, the way we express ourselves
through our body language, eye contact and gestures
also communicates something. A simple gesture like
nodding the head is considered to be YES in certain
cultures and NO in others
4) Tendency to evaluate : Humans tend to
make sense of the behavior and
communication of others by analyzing them
from one’s own cultural point of view without
taking into consideration why the other
person is behaving or communicating a
certain way
5) High anxiety : Sometimes being confronted
with a different cultural perspective will
create an anxious state in an individual who
does not know how to act or behave and what
is considered to be appropriate (For example:
A Japanese man and an American having a
business meeting where both are unsure of the
other’s cultural norms)
