Philippine Contemporary Art explores new subjects and mediums to express Filipino identity. It allows for experimentation and is not confined to traditional notions of space and format. Contemporary artists also aim to directly engage spectators.

Philippine Contemporary Art has become more expressive and aggressive over time as artists use different arts to portray Filipino life. It has also moved from galleries and studios into public spaces. New art forms are constantly being developed as part of the Philippine art scene.

According to Leon Benesa, Filipino art depicts everyday scenes and surroundings in a realistic way that captures the Filipino spirit and land. He considers Fernando Amorsolo's landscapes as truly embodying Filipino ethos.

PHILIPPINE

CONTEMPORARY
ART
Dr. Patrick Flores

 Describes Philippine Contemporary

art with “The feeling that all is
possible in the contemporary,
conceived as a constantly extending
and deepening constellation of art.”
Philippine Contemporary Art
 Permits possibilities of exploring either
the subject or medium in art to express
the Filipino sense of self.
 You may not belief it, but everyday, new

art forms are being created in our country

that are becoming part of the
contemporary art production of the
Philippines.
Philippine Contemporary Art

 At present, Filipinos are becoming

more and more aggressive as they
use the arts to express themselves
and create wonderful artworks that
try to capture the Filipino way of life.
Philippine Contemporary Art

 Contemporary artists have brought

their artworks into the street, in
public, because in contemporary
times, the main feature of any art
primarily depends on how the art is
able to connect with spectators.
Philippine Contemporary Art

 Can be found even in the most

unsuspecting places. It cannot be
reduced to conventional notions
of space and medium.
Contemporary art allows Filipino
artists to portray the subject and
the medium in innovative and
skillful ways, reflecting Filipino
identity.
PHILIPPINE ART AS A
FILIPINO
 Many scholars debate on the identity of
art produced by Filipinos. Are they 100 %
authentic Philippine art? Are the
landscape painting of Fernando Amorsolo
or the historical depictions of Carlos
“Botong” Francisco genuinely Filipino?
 This speculation on the “Filipino-ness” of
works by Filipino artists is caused by our
colonial history and migrant reality. The
influences brought by the Spaniards,
Americans, and other Asian countries has
become part of or identity that is evident
in our art: Spanish-inspired architecture,
American-influenced poetry and music
and so on.
 The migrant reality of
globalization also shaped
Philippine art. Across the world,
Filipinos have adapted to foreign
culture.
LEO BENESA
A Filipino poet, essayist and art critic,
who said that there is certain characteristic
of Filipino art.
“The idea was that the depiction of scenes
of everyday life and the surroundings
without idealizing them was closest in the
spirit to the Filipino soul and native soil.”
An art can be considered
Filipino art when it
depicts the Filipino way of
living.
Benesa

 He describes Amorsolo’s works

as the “most expensive of the
ethos of the race and the
predominantly agricultural
countryside.”
 As times are quickly changing, brought
about by the advancement in information
technology and communication, the
identity of the Filipino in the arts is one
that is constantly struggling and
evolving.
