Parts of Multiplication Strategies of Multiplication

Multiplication involves combining equal groups to find a total. It has four parts: the two factors and the product. The first factor represents the number of groups, while the second tells how many objects are in each group. To find the product, there are four strategies: arrays use rows and columns, equal groups involve adding groups of objects, repeated addition adds the second factor multiple times, and number lines use jumps of a certain length along a line.

PARTS OF MULTIPLICATION

STRATEGIES OF MULTIPLICATION
What is multiplication?

Multiplication is combining
equal groups together to
find a total.
Parts of a Multiplication Sentence

4 x 3 = 12

Parts of a Multiplication Sentence
The second factor in
multiplication tells us
The first factor in how many pieces in
multiplication tells us each group.
how many groups we So, in this example,
have. there are 3 pieces in
So, in this example, each groups. The product tells us how
there are 4 groups. many pieces we have
altogether.
So, in this example,

4 x 3 = 12 there are 12 pieces

altogether.

How many How many How many

groups ? pieces ? pieces in
all ?
Strategies of Multiplication
There are four multiplication strategies that we
can use to find the product.

1. Arrays
2. Equal Groups
3. Repeated Addition
4. Number Lines
Arrays
An array is a group of objects arranged into rows and
columns. The number of rows is the first factor. The
number of columns is the second factor.
Example: 5 x 6 = ?
6 columns

5 rows 30 pieces in
all
Equal Groups
The first factor tells how many groups you have. The
second factor tells how many pieces are in each group.
Example: 7 x 4 = ?

7 groups 4 pieces in each group 28 pieces in all

So, 7 x 4 = 28
Repeated Addition
When using repeated addition, you add the second factor
repeatedly. You look at the first factor to know how many
times to add.
Example: 3 x 6 = ?
3 X 6 = ?
Add this Add this
many number
times

6 + 6 + 6 = 18 So, 3 x 6 = 18
Number Lines
Using a number line let you skip to find the product. The
first factor tells you how many “jumps” to make on the
number line. The second factor tells you how many spaces
are in each jump.
Example: 4 x 3 = ? 4 jumps 3 spaces

So, 4 x 3 = 12
