Moment Area Method Presentation

This document discusses the moment-area method for determining slope and deflection of beams. It presents two theorems: 1) The angle between tangents at any two points equals the area under the bending moment diagram between those points. 2) The tangential deviation between two points equals the product of the area under the bending moment diagram and the centroid's distance from a reference axis. Examples show applying the theorems by drawing bending moment diagrams, (M/EI) diagrams, and elastic curves to find slope and deflection at given points.

MOMENT-AREA

THEOREMS
MOMENT-AREA THEOREMS

This method is based upon two theorems related to the area of the bending-
moment diagram, it is called the moment-area method.
-This method use to find slope and deflection of a beam graphically.
-We have seen haw to find slope and deflection of a beam using integration
and singularity method.
-In this section we will see how geometric properties of the elastic curve can
be used to find the deflection and slope of a beam at a specific point.
-So we should understand the deflection of a beam under a given loading.
-And this method is relative, we are finding the slope and deflection of a
beam one point to another point.
-In this method We have two theorems ;
First moment area theorem
-The first theorem used to determine the slope of a beam.
-The angle between the tangents at any points equals to the
Area of M\EI diagram between these points.
To proof this;
-Let us consider a beam AB subjected to some arbitrary loading
-The firs t step is to draw our M\EI diagram but first we have
to draw the Bending moment diagram first.
- from our elastic curve equation ;
Considering two arbitrary points C and D on the beam and integrating both
members from C to D, we write

Where and denote the slope at C and D, respectively.

-The right-hand member represents the area under the (M|EI) diagram
between C and D.
Sign conventions
-positive area , an area located above the x axis corresponds to a
counterclockwise rotation of the tangent to the elastic curve as we
move from C to D.
-Negative area ,an area located below the x axis corresponds to a
clockwise rotation.
-The angles and are positive when counterclockwise.
-The angle between the tangents is positive when the angle is
algebraically larger than the angle
-Also, note that point D must be to the right of point C; that is, it must
be further along the axis of the beam as we move in the x direction.
-The bending moment M is positive according to our usual sign
convention; positive-counter Cw, negative Cw.
Second moment area theorem
-It is used to find the deflection of the beam.
-The tangential deviation of C with respect to D is equal to the
product the of area of the (M\EI) diagram between C and D
and the centroid with respect to a vertical axis through C.
-To proof this let us consider the previous beam;
-Let us now consider two points P and P’ located between C and D, and at
a distance dx from each other. The tangents to the elastic curve drawn at P
and P’ intercept a segment of length dt on the vertical through point C.
Since the slope at P and the angle formed by the tangents at P and
P’ are both small quantities, we can assume that dt is equal to the arc of
circle of radius X1.
subtending the angle . We have, therefore;
substituting for we have ;
We now integrate from C to D.

-The integral of the left hand member is thus equal to the vertical
distance from C to the tangent at D. This distance is denoted by tc|
d and is called the tangential deviation of C with respect to D.
-The right-hand member in Eq. (9.58), thus, represents the first
moment with respect to that axis of the area located under the
(My|EI) diagram between C and D.
-Recalling that the first moment of an area with respect to an
axis is equal to the product of the area and of the distance from its
centroid to that axis.

-we may also express the second moment-area

theorem as follows:

-where X1 is the distance from the centroid of the area to the vertical
axis through C.
-if we want from the axis D ;

-where X2 is centroid from vertical axis D.

BENDING-MOMENT DIAGRAMS BY PARTS
When a bending-moment or (My|EI) diagram is drawn by parts, the various areas defined by the
diagram consist of simple geometric shapes, such as rectangles, triangles, and parabolic spandrels.
- In this section we have some summarized, haw to find the area and centroid, for different figures.
