Nylon
● High molecular weight polyamide
● Commonly known as Nylon
● Crystalline polymers produced by
condensation polymerization of diacid
and diamine.
Types of Nylon
Nylon 6
•Nylo begins as pure caprolactum which is a ring structured molecules.
•nCaprolactum is 6 carbon atom.
•Due to which it is called as nylon 6.
•During polymerization ring is open and polymerize itself.
•Outstanding balance against mechanical properties.
•Outstanding toughness in equilibrium.
•Outstanding and chemical resistant and oil resistant.
•Long term heat resistant
•Low gasoline permeability
•Highest rate of water absobtion.
•Poor chemical resistant to strong acid

Applications:Multilayers,packaging,food and medical

covers/base,poch,and solid films.
Nylon 12
•Made up of aminolauric acid monomer.
•It contains 12 carbons, 2 nitrogen and 2 amide group.
•Lower moisture absobtion
•Good to excellent resistant against grease, oils,,fuels, hydralic fluids.
•Lowest strength
•Lower heat resistant.

Application: Sausage skin for precook sausage, deep frozen good.

Nylon 66

●1, 6-hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid is the monomer

of nylon 66.
●outstanding balance against mechanical properties
●outstanding toughness in equilibrium moisture content.
●Outstanding and chemical resistant and oil resistant.
●outstanding heat resistance (at long term continous maximum
temeprature ranging between 80C-150C.
●high water absoption
●poor chemical resistant to strong acids and bases.

●Applications:packaging meat and cheese,industrial end

uses, stiff packages ,snack ,condiments ,shredded cheese and
Nylon 66/610
● it is a copolymer made from hexamethylenediamine ,adipic acid
and sebaic acid.
● Applications:flexible packaging for food stuff and medical
packaging.
Nylon 6/12
● high impact strength
● good resistant to grease
● high abrasion resistance ,even
when runing dry.
● Applications:Multilyers food
packaging
Amorphous polyamide
● known as Nylon 6-3-T.
● give to increase the crystallinity to polymer structure.
● the tertiary butyl group attached to the amine molecules is bulky and
disrupts this molecules stability to crystallize.
● crystal clear high optical transparency
● high mechanical stability
● high heat deflection temperature
● high impact strength
● good chemical resistant compared to other plastic
● good electrical properties
● low mold shrinkage

● Applications:multilayer fleaxable film in meat and cheese packages

Ethylene -vinyl Alcohol
● it is copolymer of ethyline and vinyl alcohol.
● these materials are high crystalline
● produced from various levels of ethylene content.
● antistatic property
● Luter and transperancy
● printability
● resistant to oils and organic solvents
● weather resistant
● premeablity

● Applications:edible oils,juice and cosmatics

● ,pharma industries,heating pipes,packaging for condiments
Biodegradable packaging
Biodegradable packaging
● made from renewable sources such as corn, wood, oats.
● metabolize by microbes present in environment
● some petroleum based polymer are also biodegradable but this
process takes long time.
● this petroleum based polymers contributes to global warming
because it release carbon dioxide.
Types
Polylactic acid.(100%) biodegradable)
Cellophane
Polycaprolactum
polyhydroxyalkanotes
polyanhydriedes
pCCp(bis-carboxyphenoxypropane)
polyglycolic acid
Polylactic acid
● 100% biodegradable.
● made from corn starch and sugarcane.
● PLA is thermoplastic
● high strength
● bacterial fermentation is used to make lactic acid
● which converts into lactide dimer to remove the water.
Application:loose fill packaging,compost bags
Ethyl cellulose
● Similar to structure of cellulose and cellulose
acetate.
● some of hydroxyl functional group are replaced on
the cellulose by ethoxy group.
Applications
● pharmaceutical application ,cosmatic,nail
polish,vitamine coating,printing ink and food
packaging.
Polycaprolactone
● PCL is biodegradable polyesters with a low melting point of around
60C and a glass transition temperature about -60C.
● prepared by ring opening polymerization of E-caprolactone using a
catalyst such as stannous octanonate.
● used in drug encapsulation.
● PCL is mixed with starch to obtain a good biodegradable material at
low price.
Application
● trash bags
● PCL has been widely used in long-term implants and controlled drug
release applications.
