Unit 5 - Concessive Clause
The main clause, when it follows the concessive clause, may be emphasized by
means of : yet, still, nevertheless.
1. Although the task was heavy, yet his courage never failed.
[Although and yet are correlative conjunctions.]
If the conjunction word is any of these THOUGH, ALTHOUGH, EVEN THOUGH and EVEN
IF, that clause is called Concessive Clause:
He refused to buy a new car despite all his money. + verb + ing.
in spite of
having enough money.
Remember:
1. Although, even though + subject + verb (Concessive clause)
3. In spite of, despite + noun or verb+ing (Not a concessive clause)
2. There are structural similarities between:
"in spite of", "despite" and "although", "even though"
"because of", "due to", "owing to", "thanks to" and "because",
"since ,"as", "for". (Expressing cause and effect)
