Unit 5 - Concessive Clause

Cloth face coverings help slow the spread of COVID-19 by preventing respiratory droplets from reaching others. While face masks are not a substitute for social distancing, studies have shown that cloth masks help reduce the emission and spread of virus-carrying droplets released during breathing, speaking, coughing and sneezing. The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, to help slow the spread of the virus.

Note:
"While“ is often used as a weaker or more courteous synonym for "although".

The main clause, when it follows the concessive clause, may be emphasized by
means of : yet, still, nevertheless.

1. Although the task was heavy, yet his courage never failed.
[Although and yet are correlative conjunctions.]

2. Though his reputation was great at home, yet it was greater

abroad .

Concessive clauses sometimes omit the copula and its subject.

2. This punishment, though perhaps necessary, seems rather severe.

A concessive clause may be introduced by the conjunction as or by
a relative pronoun or a relative adverb.

much you object,} he will carry his point.
2. Weak as I am, I will make the effort.

THE TRUTH ABOUT FACE MASKS

If the conjunction word is any of these THOUGH, ALTHOUGH, EVEN THOUGH and EVEN
IF, that clause is called Concessive Clause:

b. THOUGH and EVEN THOUGH

a. BUTand ALTHOUGH:
We can join two sentences with BUT. THOUGH is informal. It means the same as
although.

Though / Although I liked the sweater, I

Benjamin has a car, but he doesn’t often drive it.
We can also use THOUGH at the end of a
sentence.
We can also use ALTHOUGH.
.1. Although the café was crowded, we found a table. 1.I liked the sweater. I decided not to buy it,
though
2. Although
it. Benjamin has a car, he doesn’t often drive 2. Even though is stronger, more emphatic than

We found a table, although the café was crowded. been playing squash.

4.Even though you dislike Johns, you should try

to be nice to her.
NOTE: " In spite of" , " despite" have similar meaning to "although" or
"even though". BUT they don't introduce clauses. They have different
syntax. They are followed by nouns or gerunds (verb + ing) They don't
introduce a clause (subject + verb).
Study this example:
"He had enough money."
"He refused to buy a new car.“
The above two statements can be combined as follows :

Despite all his money, he refused to buy a new car.

In spite of having enough money,
Despite / in spite of + a noun,

He refused to buy a new car despite all his money. + verb + ing.
in spite of
having enough money.
Remember:
1. Although, even though + subject + verb (Concessive clause)
3. In spite of, despite + noun or verb+ing (Not a concessive clause)

 "in spite of", "despite" and "although", "even though"

"since ,"as", "for". (Expressing cause and effect)
