and Time Connectors
The First Conditional (Uses)

The First Conditional is used to talk about things which are


possible in the present or in the future ―things which may
happen:
►Example: If it's sunny, we'll go to the park.
Explanation: Maybe it will be sunny ―that's possible.

► Example: Paula will be sad if Juan leaves.


Explanation: Maybe Juan will leave ― that's possible.
The First Conditional (Structure)
The First Conditional sentence consists of two clauses,
an "if clause" and a "main clause":

If Clause Main Clause


If + Subject + Present Simple Subject + Will + Verb (base form)

If it's sunny , we'll go to the park.

When the "if" clause comes first, a Comma is used.


This Rule Applies to All Conditionals
Let´s practice:
• If I __________________ (go) out tonight, I __________________ (go) to
the cinema.
• If we__________________ (arrive) late to the airport, we
__________________ (miss) the plane.
• If we __________________ (not / see) each other tomorrow, we
__________________ (see) each other next week.
• If the weather __________________ (not / improve), we
__________________ (not / have) a picnic.
• If you __________________ (not / want) to go out, I __________________
(cook) dinner at home.
• Our parents __________________ (be) angry if we _______________(not
/study)

NOTE: The order of the clauses may be changed. In this case, a comma is NOT
NECESSARY.
First Conditional
with Time Connectors

We can replace “If” with any of the following


Time Connectors:

1.When:
2.As soon as
3.Unless
4.Untill
5.Before
INSTEAD OF “IF” EXAMPLE
1. When When I die, I’ll leave all my money to charity.
If I die, I’ll leave my money to charity.
This situation is very urgent. I’ll call you as
2. As soon as soon as I have more information.
I’ll call you if I have more information.
You’ll fail the test unless you study.
3. Unless (if......not/main You’ll fail the test if you don’t study.
