Welcome to Romania

OF ANDRIESEI RARES
Introduction

 Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central Eastern and

Southeastern Europe. It is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, because
it has a very rich fauna and some areas full of history and full of beauty. If you
have ever considered visiting Romania, I assure you that you will not get bored
and you will feel wonderful because the people there are very friendly and
welcoming.
Maramures (Days 1-2)

 The first days I spent in Maramures an incredible place where people welcome
you with warmth and local dishes that are also delicious.
 The northwestern Romanian region of Maramures is home to many villages where
century-old traditions are still part of daily life.
 For a one-of-a-kind experience, take the narrow-gauge steam train. Starting from
the small logging town of Viseu de Sus, the steam railway runs along a scenic
road for about 30 miles, chugging behind an old steam engine.
 A very popular dish in Maramures is the "Balmos", corn polenta mixed with ewe's
milk cheese (or cheese fermented in wooden or clay pots) and baked in the oven.

Transilvania (Days 2-4)

 Transylvania is home to some of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns, most

notably Brasov, featuring Old Saxon architecture and citadel ruins; Sibiu with its
cobblestone streets and pastel-colored houses, and Sighisoara, adorned with a
hilltop citadel, secret passageways and a 14th century clock tower. Tiny shops
offer antiques and fine hand-made products by local artisans and artists.
 Transylvania's multi-ethnic heritage (including German and Hungarian ) is
delightfully apparent in the folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music and
festivals.
 Transylvania's cuisine displays a variety of flavors with dishes spiced with thyme,
red pepper or tarragon.  Meats, such as pork, mutton, veal, are among the most
popular ingredient in Transylvania's cuisine.

reserve designated by UNESCO as a "Reservation of the Biosphere;" the ancient
port city of Constanta, and the seaside resorts stretching along Romania's 152-
mile Black Sea coast.
 From the port city of Tulcea, day cruises through the Delta's waterways give
travelers a glimpse of the abundant wildlife and the traditional fishing villages.
 Floating reed islands, sand dunes and waterways offer shelter to over 300 species
of birds, countless fish and 1,150 species of plants.
 The delicious local salad, called Salata Dobrogeana, is made of fresh vegetables –
pepper, cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, to which boiled eggs, grated cheese, minced
dill or parsley are added.

 Oltenia is one of the oldest and the most beautiful regions of Romania, on its
territory the tourist can find multiple sightseeing options, of Roman camps, Dacian
fortresses and medieval mansions. Oltenia is also famous for its spectacular natural
scenery, but also for places of worship, monasteries and convents, which have
become historical monuments.
 Three of resorts in the region are of national interest, enjoying the potential provided
by the Danube, one of the most spectacular parts of the river, the Danube Gorge
(Clisura Cunarii) with Cazanele Miici (Small Cauldrons) and Cazanele Mari (Big
Cauldrons) being part of Oltenia. This region has a huge area of  water surface
untapped by tourists and a large number of caves, gorges and ravines that are
insufficiently exploited by tourism.
 Major tourism investments were made in spa and winter sports tourism here, in
Oltenia, being one of the largest ski areas in the Romanian mountains.

 Iasi boasts an impressive number of Orthodox churches, almost 100, most of them
located in the Golden Plateau, representing the nucleus of the city, around which
the city developed over the centuries.
 One of the most famous monuments in the city is the stunning Church of the
Three Hierarchs, built in 1639. Another major landmark in Iasi is the neo-gothic
Palace of Culture, built between 1900-1926, currently housing the Ethnographic
Museum, the Art Museum, and the History Museum of Moldova.
