TIEZA
Tourism Infrastructure and
Enterprise Zone Authority The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), a government corporation, was created by virtue of Republic Act No. 9593 or the Tourism Act 2009 on May 12, 2009, replacing the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA). TIEZA is mandated to continue the functions previously exercised by PTA under Presidential Declaration 564, unless otherwise inconsistent with the provision of RA 9593. Republic Act No. 9593 or “The Tourism Act of 2009” declares a national policy for tourism as an engine of investment, employment, growth and national development, and strengthening the Department of Tourism and its attached agencies to effectively and efficiently implement that policy, and appropriating fund thereof. TIEZA acts as Department of Tourism’s implementing arm in providing support infrastructures and facilitating investments in tourism enterprise zones (TEZ) nationwide. This is carried out through its main functions – infrastructure development; designation, regulation and supervision of TEZs; management of its existing assets or facilitation of their privatization; and administration of the collection of the Philippine Travel Tax. The travel Tax is a levy imposed by the Philippine
government on individuals who are leaving the country irrespective of the place where the air ticket is issued and the form or place of payment, as provided for Presidential Decree (PD) 1183, as amended. Pursuant to Section 73 of Republic Act No. 9593, fifty percent (50%) of the proceeds from travel tax collections shall accrue to the TIEZA, forty percent (40%) shall accrue to the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) for tourism-related educational programs and courses, and ten percent (10%) shall accrue to the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) TIEZA brings development to areas with high cultural, historical, religious, heritage and/or eco-tourism values, helping shape a deep sense of awareness and pride for Filipino’s traditions, natural bounties and uniqueness as a race. TIEZA operates and manages tourist facilitates from Luzon to Mindanao. These facilities offer services ranging from hotel and restaurant to specialized sports such as golf and scuba diving. TEZ attract private stakeholders to be shared- partners in tourism development. TEZ’s enjoy fiscal and non-fiscal incentives issues by TIEZA. Their investments will indubitably help create jobs and economic activities for local communities.
