Biofuels are liquid fuels developed from plants or waste that can be classified into three generations. Common biofuels include bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas. Bioethanol is produced through fermentation of carbohydrates by yeast and used as fuel. Biodiesel is made through transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats and also used as fuel. Biogas is produced from breakdown of organic waste by microbes and used for cooking and electricity. While biofuels are renewable and reduce pollution, high production costs and potential industrial pollution are disadvantages.

BIOFUEL
NAME- SWATI SUBHADA
MOHAPATRA SEC-A ROLL NO- 63 BSC BIOTECH 3RD YEAR WHAT IS BIOFUEL
• Biofuels are liquid fuels that have been
developed from other materials such as plants or animal waste matter. CLASSIFIATION OF BIOFUELS 1st Generation Biofuels Also called conventional biofuels . It includes sugar, starch, or vegetable oil.
2nd Generation Biofuels
Known as advanced biofuels and can be manufactured from different biomass.
3rd Generation Biofuels
Extract from algae mostly marine algae. COMMON TYPES OF BIOFUELS BIOETHANOL Bioethanol is produced by the fermentation of carbohydrate rich source which includes sugarcane, sugar beet, corn etc. Bioethanol fermentation is mostly carried out by yeast (e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae) It is colorless and clear liquid. Much more environmental friendly and low toxic. BIOETHANOL FERMENTATION PATHWAY APPLICATION OF BIOETHANOL
• Fuel for power generation by thermal
combustion. • Fuels in cogeneration system. • Feedstock in the chemical industry. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGE OF BIOETHANOL Disadvantages Advantages Ethanol is renewable Large amounts leading to problems such as soil erosion, deforestation. resource. Difficulty in transportation . Reduces greenhouse gases. During production of bioethanol , Decrease in ozone huge amount of carbon dioxide is formation. released . BIODIESEL Biodiesel ,is an alternative diesel fuel , is made from renewable biological sources such as vegetable oils & animal fats . The biodiesel can be prepared by transesterification . BIODIESEL PRODUCTION APPLICATION OF BIODIESEL As a heating oil . Biodiesel in generators . Vehicles . Cleaning oil spills . ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BIODIESEL Advantages Disadvantages Biodiesel is environmentally Biodiesel is significantly more friendly . expensive compared to It can be used in almost any standard diesel. diesel with little or no engine Slightly decreases fuel modification . economy. Less global warming. Biodiesel behaves as solvent. BIOGAS Biogas is a fuel used as domestic purpose. Obtained from cow manure , fruit and vegetable waste. Biogas is the mixture of gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. BIOGAS PRODUCTION PATHWAY ADVANTAGES BIOGAS Reduce air and water pollution . More environmental friendly fertilizers . Reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Reduces time wastage while collecting firewood. Reduces pollution. APPLICATIONS OF BIOGAS It can be used for cooking purpose and other domestic heating purpose . Used in a gas engine to convert the energy in the gas into electricity and heat. Also used for street lighting. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BIO FUEL Advantages Disadvantages
Renewable • High Cost of Production
Reduce Greenhouse • Industrial Pollution Gases • Future Rise in Price Lower level of Pollution CONCLUSION Biofuels can be defined as solid , liquid or gas fuel derived from recently dead biological material which differ it from fossil fuels that derived from long dead biological material . Biofuels production & consumption will contribute in solving the global warming .
