Motherboard Components
 Motherboard is composed of:
 PCB : printed circuit board
 chipsets : North bridge + South bridge
 internal connectors (CPU, memory, floppy, IDE, power, add-on cards, etc.)
 external connectors (USB, PS/2 keyboard & mouse, RJ-45 LAN, parallel
(line printer), serial (COM), game/MIDI, audio I/O, etc)
 headers (fans, audio input, LED, switch, USB, WOL, WOR, thermal sensor, etc)
 BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)
 ICs, Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, MOSFET, Battery
 jumpers / DIP switches (host-bus frequency, CPU multiplier, etc.)
 Others
 All these on-board components could be split into two
categories:
 SMT (surface mount technology, or SMD – surface mount device)
 DIP (dual in-line pin) packages
