FACTS
Hong Kong, officially called Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous
territory located in South China.

Hong Kong was a former colony of the British Empire until it was
given back to China in 1997, the official languages are
Cantonese and English.

Population 7 million people


Area 1,104 km2

The territory has the most skyscrapers in the world – nearly 2


times more than New York City.
Hong Kong is divided in 18 different districts with an excellent
public transport system & infrastructure.
The hotel sector is rapidly growing with an average occupancy of
93% across 277 hotels. Expected increase in supply in 2018 is
10%, with 4,5% in the luxury segment.
KOWLOON
Kowloon is an urban area north of Hong Kong Island and is home to
2.5 million people across 5 districts.

Kowloon, known for its dark history as a underdeveloped district, has


a much lower skyline compared to the rest of Hong Kong. This is the
result of its location close to an old, now unused airport.

Famous areas are Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. These areas are one
of the busiest and most tourist-packed areas in Hong Kong.

HK ISLAND
Hong Kong Island is an island in the southern part of Hong
Kong. It is home to 1.3 million people and is divided in 4
districts.

A famous area is Central which is the historical, political and


economic center of Hong Kong. The central district was the
earliest urban settlement in colonial Hong Kong.

HK Island is famous for it’s diversity – highlights include:

 Mountain ranges - perfect for hiking


 The Peak – most famous attraction with spectacular views
 High skyscrapers in Central
 Lan Kwai Fong & Soho – nightlife area

URBAN SITES
The housing market in Hong Kong is unlike any other. Prices of
real estate are skyrocketing and as a consequence of no
governmental standards and the high density of population, the
living circumstances can vary a lot.

People with a low income have to live in a home share – also


known as cage houses. People live here on 2 m2. On the other
hand there are amazing luxurious mansions with view of the
Victoria Harbor and the skyline of Hong Kong.

These housing circumstances in combination with the urban


design of Hong Kong will provide you with new impressions of
the city everyday.

Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world


for the 7th time in a row.

From an interns perspective, a room of 14 m2 in attractive


districts such as Wan Chai and Causeway Bay will cost you
roughly 650 euro.
HIKING

NIGHT MARKETS
Stroll down along the many night markets that Hong Kong has
to offer - where bargaining is considered a sport.

These markets are famous for their wide variety of products and
goods, ranging from souvenirs to goldfishes.
TOURISTICS SITES
As an intern in Hong Kong, there are 4 mandatory touristic sites
that you will have to experience.

First, the famous Peak, that can be reached by tram or hiking, in


which it will give you the great overview of Hong Kong.
(TIP: go during a weekday and sunset)

Second, take the Star-Ferry that crosses Kowloon and Hong


Kong Island.
(TIP: go between 8-9 p.m. to enjoy the symphony of lights)

Third, take the unique-styled trams across the Hong Kong


island.

And finally, place your bets on your lucky horse in the Happy
Valley in Wan Chai.
DAY TOURS
Hong Kong has 261 islands for you to explore.

Take the ferry to the Cheung Chau island to meet the locals and
eat freshly caught seafood. Or take a step further and visit the
kingdom of gambling that is Macau, with one hour ferry ride.

Additionally, Hong Kong offers many beach sites, from the expat
area of Repulse Bay and Stanley to remote beaches such as Big
Wave Bay beach. Consider the option to sleep over the
weekend in a rented house or tent.
NIGHTLIFE
Nightlife is one of the pillars of living and experiencing the
culture of Hong Kong. There are many clubs and bars for you to
indulge and mingle.

The most popular to-go place is Lan Kwai Fong (LKF) in Central,
where you will find a great variety of bars and clubs.

Or take the streets of Wan Chai and party with the expats living
in Hong Kong, in the happy-hour filled bars.

CANTONESE
Hong Kong is home to the Cantonese
cuisine, famous for their Dim Sum, Fried
Noodles and Pork with Rice.
CHINESE
What people do not know is that Chinese
cuisine is the most diverse in the world,
ranging from Peking Duck to the vast spices
of Sichuan
TAIWANESE
Taiwanese cuisine derives from the Chinese
cuisine, however in Hong Kong, it is famous
for their Bubble Tea
JAPANESE
Japanese cuisine has spread their influence in
Hong Kong. Take your chances to try the real
Japanese cuisine, with the most famous
being Ramen, Donburi and Tsukemen
INDIAN
The Indian culture is very present in Hong
Kong, with their main area being in Tsim Sha
Tsui. Streets filled with “hole-in-the-wall”
restaurants serving delicious Curry
SOUTHEAST
ASIAN
Southeast Asian cuisine exists mainly out of
Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian cuisines.
Bringing forth delicious spices.
AMERICAN
The American brunch has become very
dominant in Hong Kong. As also serving a
varied fancy American-styled restaurants
EUROPEAN
Lastly but not least, if you miss your own
cuisine, Hong Kong offers a great variety of
European-styled restaurants.
CULTURE
People in Hong Kong are very proud of their own culture,
which combines elements from the traditional Cantonese
culture with British influences. They call themselves
‘Hongkongnese’ to distinguish themselves from Chinese that
have origins in mainland China.

Family solidarity, courtesy and ‘saving face’ are heavily


represented in the behavior of Hongkongnese.

Religion is, in parallel with its diversity in culture, varied. Main


religions are: Buddhism, Christianity and Muslim.
NEW YEARS
While people in Hong Kong celebrate western traditions
as much as Eastern, there are some celebrations and
traditions as part of the eastern culture.

Lunar New Year – takes place in February 2019 and is


the most famous tradition. In the past, this was the time
that farmers were farming their harvest. It is celebrated
with family at home where packed presents are given,
dragon dances are executed and temples are
intensively visited to pray for health and wealth.
DRAGON’S BOAT
This tradition can be traced back to a minister who was
serving the king, but committed suicide in a river. Local
people would race to the body to save it, while beating
drums to ward of evil spirits.

Nowadays, it is about dragon boat racing, drinking rice


wine and enjoying traditional Chinese cuisine.
MOON CAKES
A Chinese bakery product that is only consumed in
September and October, during the mid-autumn
festival. This tradition is meant for the lunar
appreciation and moon watching, as the moon in
Chinese culture mythically represents the goddess
of immortality.
TRAVEL &
DISCOVER
After discovering Hong Kong to its fullest,
there is one other major advantage:

It is very convenient located to discover what


other major cities and interesting cultures Asia
has to offer. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai,
Seoul, Singapore & Tokyo are within a 2-3hr
flight radius.
