WOMEN’S INFLUENCE ON ROCK HISTORY

Although rock was largely male-dominated, women kickstarted the industry and made
several contributions that furthered rock music’s development throughout history.
1940’s - 1960’s: Emergence of Rock N Roll
● 50’s -official birth of Rock ‘N’ Roll
● “Godmother of Rock ‘N’ Roll” = Sister Rosetta Tharpe
○ Life: Troupe to Pioneer of Rock N Roll (Songs: “That’s All” and “Stranger Things...”)
○ Influenced by gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues; used heavy distortion
○ Criticisms: “She plays like a man.” Her: “Can’t no man play better than me”
