Development of A Smart Power Meter For AMI

The document discusses the development of a smart power meter using ZigBee communication for AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure). It proposes using the Microchip ATMEL89S52 microcontroller to develop a smart power meter that can transmit detailed power consumption and outage event data to a backend system via a ZigBee wireless network. The ZigBee network allows for two-way communication compared to older automatic meter reading systems based on GSM. Key aspects of the proposed system include the hardware requirements, ZigBee communication standard, microcontroller features, and software requirements.

Abstract:


 The wireless communicationnetwork can be utilized for

the Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI). Therefore, this
paper tries to use the new wireless communication
technologies to design and implement a ZigBee-based smart
power meter. An outage recording system is also designed
and embedded into the smart meter. The microcontroller of
Microchip AtmeL89S52 series is used to develop the
proposed smart power meter.

 A ZigBee system is then deigned and integrated into the

proposed power meter, and used to transmit the detailed
power consumption data and outage event data to rear-end
processing system.
Introduction
 While most of the power meters are still
mechanical ones without digitization. An AMI
consists of smart meter, communication
technology, meter data management, and
associated software and hardware
 ZigBee, a low-speed LR-WPAN (Low-Rate Wireless
Area Personal Network) based on IEEE 802.15.4
standard, is one of them.
 The microcontroller of Microchip ATMEL89S52
series is used to develop a smart power meter.
AMI

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) refers to

systems that measure, collect and analyses energy
usage, and interact with advanced devices such as
electricity meters, gas meters, heat meters, and water
meters, through various communication media either
on request (on-demand) or on pre-defined schedules
EXISTING

 AMI differs from traditional Automatic meter reading

(AMR) in that it enables two-way communications with
the meter.

Systems only capable of meter readings do not qualify as

AMI systems.

IN old method they used GSM communication system

for transmitting the readings.
PROPOSED SYSTEM

 In this we are using AMI(Advanced metering

infrastructure) for calculating the readings.
