Busstat Module 2
Busstat Module 2
• Descriptive Statistics
• Measures of Central Tendency
• Mean
• Median
• Mode
Module 2. Descriptive Statistics
A survey among randomly select 10 students
was conducted to determine their daily
allowances (in pesos). Compute the average
daily allowance of the students using the
gathered data shown below
100 150 150 100 200 70 140 170 90 120
Module 2. Descriptive Statistics
• Mean or X bar
= 100 + 150 + 150 + 100 + 200 + 70 + 140 + 170 + 90 + 120 = 1290 = 129
10 10
• Median
First thing you need to do is arrange the value from lowest to highest
70 90 100 100 120 140 150 150 170 200
Then determine the median rank = (n + 1) = (10 + 1) = 11 = 5.5 = 130
2 2 2
• Two modes – 100 and 150 – both appeare twice in the data set
Module 2. Descriptive statistics
• Measures of Variation/dispersion
• Range
• Interquartile range
• Variance & Standard deviation
• Coefficient of Variation
• Z-core
Module 2. Descriptive Statistics
• Range = 200 – 70 = 130
• Interquartile range (IQR) = Q3 – Q1
Q3 = 3(10+1) = 8.25 rank get 8th value (150), add it to the product of .025
4 & difference between 9th(170) & 8th (150) values
Q3 = 150 + 0.25(170-150) = 155 Q3 value
Q1 = (10+1) = 2.75 rank get 2nd value (90), add it to the product of 0.75 &
4 the difference between 3rd (100) and 2nd (90) values
Q1 = 90 + 0.75(100-90) = 97.5 Q1 value
IQR = Q3 – Q1 = 155 – 97.5 = 57.5
Module 2. Descriptive Statistics
• Variance (S^2) & Standard deviation (S)
x (x – xbar)2
70 ( 70 – 129)2 = 3481
90 ( 90 – 129)2 = 1521
100 (100 – 129)2 = 841
100 (100 – 129) =

120 (120 – 129)2 = 81 S= S2 = 1610 = 40.12

Module 2. Descriptive statistics
• Coefficient of variation (CV)
CV = 40.12 X 100 % = 31.10%
129
• Z-score
Zlowest = (70 – 129) = -1.47
40.12
Zhighest = (200 – 129) = 1.77
40.12
Module 2. Descriptive Statistics
• Shapes
• Symmetrical
• Skewness
• Left skewed or negatively skewed
• Right skewed or positively skewed
Module 2. Descriptive Statistics
