Conversion and Reactor Sizing-Chapter 2

This document discusses reactor sizing and conversion. It introduces the mole balance equations used to size batch, continuous stirred-tank (CSTR), plug flow (PFR), and packed bed (PBR) reactors. Conversion is defined as a measure of reaction progress, and design equations are developed in terms of conversion. These equations can be used to determine the reactor volume or catalyst needed to achieve a specified conversion, or to calculate the conversion achieved for a given reactor size. Examples of design equations for CSTR, PFR and PBR reactors are also presented.

Conversion and Reactor Sizing

The mole balance equations should be used to size the batch, CSTR
(continuous stirrer tank reactor), PFR (Plug flow reactor) or PBR
(Packed bed reactor).

To size these reactors we first need to define conversion, which a

measure of the reaction’s progress toward completion.

Then we rewrite all the balance equations in terms of conversion.

These equations are often referred to as the design equations.

One may use the appropriate design equation to determine the

volume necessary (or catalyst for PBR) to achieve a specified
conversion

Or, for a given reactor (know volume) what conversion can be

achieved
