Arithmetic Sequence: Finding The Common Difference (D)

The document discusses arithmetic sequences and how to find the common difference. It provides examples of arithmetic sequences and shows how to calculate the common difference by subtracting consecutive terms. It also demonstrates how to find later terms in a sequence by using the common difference. Finally, it presents examples of finding the common difference and solving for the first term of a sequence given other terms.

SEQUENCE

A sequence where every term after the first term is

obtained by adding a constant called the common
difference (d).

A sequence where the difference between any two

consecutive terms is a constant.
HOW TO FIND THE COMMON
DIFFERENCE

-To find the common difference (d), you simply

subtract the term () by its preceding term ()

d= () - ()
where n is the term of the sequence
HOW TO FIND THE COMMON
DIFFERENCE
3, 6, 9, 12
1st term 2nd term 3rd term 4th term

d = 2nd term – 1st term

d=6–3
d=3
Therefore, the common difference of the sequence is 3.

d=– d = -6 + (+2)
d = -6 – (-2) d = -4

Therefore, the common difference of the sequence is -4.
