Signals and Communications Presentation

This document discusses analog and digital communication. [1] It defines analog communication as using continuous signals to transmit information like images, voice and video, while digital communication uses discrete digital signals represented by square waves. [2] The key differences between the two types are then outlined relating to bandwidth, power, fidelity, flexibility, error rates, synchronization and cost. [3] The document also describes the essential parts of any communication system as a sender, receiver and channel, and defines different signal types like analog, digital, periodic and aperiodic signals.

ANALOG COMMUNICATION

Analog communication is
the process of conveying
(sending, receiving, and
processing) of information
including image, voice, and
video by using continuous
signals or analog signals. Analog communication system
DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

Digital Communication is
the one which uses digital
signals for transmitting
information between source
and destination. Digital
signals are represented by a
square wave. This signal
consists of discrete values
rather than continuous
values. DIGITAL COMMUNICATION
KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ANALOG AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

ESSENTIAL PARTS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Any system which

provides communication
(sends, receives, and
process information)
consists of three
essential parts: sender,
receiver and channel as
shown in the figure
TYPES OF SIGNALS

Depending on their
characteristics, signals
are mainly classified into
two types: Analog and
Digital. Analog and
Digital signals are further
classified, as shown in
the following figure.
ANALOG SIGNAL

A continuous
time varying signal,
which represents a
time varying
quantity can be
termed as an Analog
Signal. This signal
keeps on varying
with respect to time,
according to the
instantaneous values
of the quantity,
which represents it.
DIGITAL SIGNAL

A signal which is
discrete in nature or which
is non-continuous in form
can be termed as a Digital
signal. This signal has
individual values, denoted
separately, which are not
based on the previous
values, as if they are
derived at that particular
instant of time.
PERIODIC SIGNAL

Any analog or digital

signal, that repeats its
pattern over a period of
time, is called as
a Periodic Signal. This
signal has its pattern
continued repeatedly and
is easy to be assumed or
to be calculated. Eg: sine
wave, square wave,
sawtooth wave, etc.
APERIODIC SIGNAL

Any analog or digital

signal, that doesn’t repeat
its pattern over a period of
time is called as Aperiodic
Signal. This signal has its
pattern continued but the
pattern is not repeated. It
is also not so easy to be
assumed or to be
calculated. Eg: sound
signals from radio, all
types of noise signals.

ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL SIGNAL OVER ANALOG SIGNAL

 Digital signals are more secure, and they do not get

damaged by noise.
 These signals use low bandwidth
 They allow the signals transmitted over a lengthy distance.
 Digital signal has a higher rate transmission
 By using these signals, we can translate the messages,
audio, video into device language.
 Digital signals enable the transmission of multidirectional
concurrently.
