Analysis Services

• SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) is an online

analytical data engine used in decision support and
business analytics
• SSAS supports two modelling modes—multidimensional and tabular
• The multidimensional mode also includes a data mining engine
• It provides analytical data for business reports and client
applications such as:
• Reporting Services reports, Power BI, Excel, and other third-party data visualization tools

Reporting Services

• SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) delivers

enterprise, web-enabled reporting functionality
• Implemented as a Report Server, in one of two
modes—Native and SharePoint—it can scale to
support thousands of users
Reporting Services

• SSRS 2016 is extended with a new capability to

deliver mobile reports, and is enhanced with a new
modern web portal
• To contrast classic RDL reports
with the new mobile reports,
SSRS reports are now referred to
as either paginated or mobile

Hybrid BI

• SQL Server 2016 enables hybrid BI scenarios by

delivering data and analytics to the cloud
• Leverages utilizing existing investments with SSAS data models
• Supports secure, cloud-based BI without needing to move data

• Two SQL Server hybrid BI capabilities:

• Pin SSRS report items to Power BI dashboards
• Deliver on-premises data to Power BI
dashboards and reports
Hybrid BI
Power BI Gateways

• Access to on-premises data is achieved by installing

gateways
• Personal Gateway
• Ideal for analysts and other heavy data consumers
• Enables on-demand or scheduled data refresh of Power BI desktop files

• On-Premises Data Gateway

• Centrally managed service for large groups of users
• Enables on-demand or scheduled data refresh of Power BI desktop files
• Enables also access to live connections for certain data sources
Hybrid BI
Azure Analysis Services

• It is now possible to provision an Analysis Services

database on Azure
• Tabular projects (compatibility 1200) can be deployed on Azure
• Resources can be scaled to meet business needs, and billed by Query Processing
Units (QPUs)
• Data refresh can be achieved from cloud sources:
• Azure SQL Database, and Azure SQL Data Warehouse
• Data refresh can be achieved from on-premises sources with a gateway:
• SQL Server, SQL Data Warehouse, APS, Oracle, and Teradata
• Permissions are granted to Azure Active Directory users and groups
• Existing client tools can connect to Azure Analysis Services
