3 Assignment 3 Lofting

This document provides instructions for using OnShape to create a lofted 3D object from 2D sketches on different planes. The steps include: 1. Creating new sketches on separate planes 4 inches apart and making 9-sided polygons of different sizes on each plane. 2. Using the loft tool to connect the sketches, adding facets to smoothly transition between the profiles and generate a 3D shape. 3. Repeating the process multiple times to create additional sketches and loft between them, constructing a complex vase-like object out of the series of lofts. The instructions demonstrate the lofting tool in OnShape to form 3D geometry from 2D profiles on different planes.

Assignment 3
Lofting
By: Mr. Gravitt
Notes
• #‘ is feet & #” means inches.
• Hotkeys AKA Keyboard Shortcuts – Hotkeys
speed things up, once you learn them, & they
allow you to draw way faster. However, they it
takes awhile to learn them all…
• See the next page for a full list &/or - Shift Key
& ? – Brings up the full list at anytime in the
Software!!!
• Escape Key – unselects things.
• Hold the shift key – you can select multiple
things at once.
Step 1 Your Mr Gravitt’s Lessons Folder
you made in lesson 1
Step 2.1 Create a Document named
Assignment 2 Revolving
Step 2.2 Create a Document named
Assignment 3 Lofting
Step 2.3 on the assignment
Create a New Sketch
Step 2.4 Name the New Sketch
(Base Drawing)
Step 2.5 View it in 2D
Step 3.1 Polygon Tool
• This software has a
“Polygon Tool”
• I will later show you
how to make polygons
in software programs
that don’t have a
Polygon Tool.
• Click this tool
• Go to the Origin Point
in the Center 0,0,0
Step 3.2 Polygon Tool
• Drag out a Polygon, I choose to make one with 9
sides.
Step 3.3 Measure out the Polygon
• Select the
Dimension tool.
• Measure out the
polygon.
• I choose to
measure from
the origin to a
facet.
• I choose to size
it 3 inches.
Step 3.4
• Finish Drawing by
clicking the green
checkmark.
• Go to Trimetric View
(AKA 3D View)
• Next we are going to
make a new PLANE.
Step 4.1 Inserting a New Plane
• Get the new plane tool from the ribbon.
• Remember a Plane is like a “desktop, a table,
that you can place drawings/sketches on”
Step 4.2 Inserting a New Plane
• Select the plane
tool.
• I choose to
select Offset
• I choose to
Offset off of the
Top Plane.
• I went up 4
inches.
• So, Plane 1
appears 4 in up.
Step 4.3 Inserting a New Plane
• Named it Top
Plane 2
• Click green
checkmark to
finish/insert it.
Step 4.4 Inserting a New Plane
• Click Top Plane 2.
• I right clicked to get
the new sketch.
• Remember you can
also just hit the new
sketch button in the
ribbon, &/or use
hotkeys. There is
almost always 3
different ways of
doing anything…
Step 4.5 Inserting a New Plane
• Renamed it Plane 2
Drawing.
• Go to 3D view /
trimetric view / & in
this case top view,
all 3 are
synonymous with
each other in this
situation.
• We have made a
new plane & put
drawing on it…
Step 5.1 2nd Drawing
• Made “Top Plane
2” & put drawing
“Plane 2 Drawing”
on that plane.
Have drawing
“Plane 2 Drawing”
selected. Looking
down on it in 2D
• NOTE: Even though we
view.
can clearly see the base
• Can see the “Base drawing, we are going to
Drawing” be drawing 4 inches
underneath it. above it on Plane 2.
Step 5.2 2nd Drawing
• I choose to make a
another 9 facet polygon
• I choose to make it 4
inches.
• Not worrying about
making anything line up
other than the origin.
• Finish the sketch.
• Then go to 3D View, &
then you can see what
we have done.
Step 5.3 2nd Drawing
• You can spin
it around &
see what we
have done.
• Next we are
going to LOFT
these 2
drawing
together to
make a 3D
object.
Step 6.1
Lofting
• Select the
Lofting tool
• The Lofting Tool lets you add or subtract
material in-between 2 OR MORE drawings to
make a 3D object.
• It puts in smooth curves of material
• It tries to figure out facets, we can tell it which
facets, & by doing so we can curve, bevel,
wrap, & etc…
Step 6.2 Lofting
• Select the drawings you
want to loft.
• NOTE: There are many,
many options here, we
are keeping it simple for
now…
Step 6.3 Lofting
• THIS IS
JUST AN
EXAMPLE…
• Here I put
some facets
on it.
• You could put
facets &/or
rounds.
• &/or etc…
Step 6.4 Lofting Multiple Drawings

• Here, I just repeated the steps.

• I made a total of 8 planes & drawings.
• Going to make a Vase.
Step 6.5 Lofting

• Select the drawings you want to loft.

Step 6.6 Part Done

• Spin it around & take a look, It’s done…

• With lofting you can make all kinds of organic
shapes…
