Basics of Information Technology: by Salman Tahir

Information technology (IT) is an umbrella term used to describe careers involving computers, computer systems consisting of hardware, software, and data, and staff maintaining computer systems. The document goes on to define computer engineers as those who design computer systems and components. It describes a computer system as a set of hardware and software used for processing and defines the basic input, processing, output, and storage (IPOS) cycle that computers follow.

Basics of

Information Technology
By Salman Tahir
 Information technology (IT) is an umbrella term. It is used to
describe careers that use computers;
 To describe systems of hardware, software, and data; and to
describe the staff of an organization who takes care of
computer systems.
 Tech-oriented career
Introduction  Graphic designers,
 Radiologists
 Artist
 Computer engineer
 Computer Engineers:
 Describe computer system and their components
 Computer System is the set of hard ware and software that
people using for processing
 Hardware: Tangible part of the computer like input
/output, processing device and storage
Continue  Software: Set of Instruction or Program
 Processor Process the software /Program
 People: End user
 Did You Know?
 The word computer originates from the Latin word computare
Computer meaning “programmable machine”.
 A computer system is the set of hardware and software that
people use for processing
IPOS Cycle
 Input: is the process of obtaining data ,instruction from the
outside of the computer and bringing into the computer

Input
 Processing means to execute or run programs.
 The program itself is a list of instructions.
 Each instruction is stored in memory. Processing involves
fetching the next instruction from memory, retrieving any data
that the instruction will execute on, and executing the
instruction on the data.
 Types of instructions:
Processing  data movement, arithmetic or logic operation, branch, and
input/output.
 Processing is handled by the processor, also known as the
central processing unit (CPU), and memory

 Output is the process of sending results of some operation(s)
(or of the entire program) and delivering the results to the
“outside world”.
 The output should also be transformed into some useful
representation that humans can interpret.
 Output could be text, images (graphics), sound, video, or some
combination.
Output  Common output devices are the monitor and printer but also
include speakers, braille reader, and projector.
 Storage is the permanent (or at least long-term) saving of files.
 This differs from memory, which is used in the short-term and
is more limited in storage capacity.
 The items stored are output from programs, data files used for
processing, or computer programs.
 Most common form of storage is the hard disk drive.
