Unit 1-4 Pitch
Unit 1-4 Pitch
By Aimee Booth
For my animation and short film I chose the
topic of music. I did this because I think:
it is a topic that speaks to most people
it is an appropriate topic for my target
audience
it is a topic that, although we know, we may
not fully understand
MY TOPIC has a bigger effect on us than we realise
These reasons combined assured me that this
topic would be perfect for what I wanted to do,
as it can create a production that is educational
for my animation, and another production that
is entertaining for my short film.
Over the course of this unit I learnt a lot about my topic,
through both the internet and others findings as well as
some of my own. I used many different reliable sources to
gain knowledge on the topic and found lots of facts that
massively fuelled my factual animation:
Professor Catherine Loveday says “music is one of the
most fundamental ways to express emotion” and “one
of the most powerful reasons we choose a song is
because it reminds us of someone”
WHAT I LEARNT- drill music has been linked to an increase in aggressive

actions as well as attention seeking crime amongst the
youth.
A graph called ‘the life span retrieval curve’ shows that
we remember the most between the ages of 10-30
Certain aspects of memories fade, but we will
remember the music from our teen years and young
adulthood forever.
I organised several focus groups over this period to find
out how people feel about my topic, what they know about
it and what they might like to see in a production
surrounding music.
Here are some of my primary findings through my focus
groups:
everyone has a songs that remind them of childhood or
of another person
Music effects our mood in more ways than one; as well
WHAT I LEARNT- as making us happier it can also make us sadder
PRIMARY RESEARCH We can all understand why modern music such as drill
has been linked to the rise in attention seeking crime
and aggressive behaviour
We all believe music is one of the most fundamental
ways of expressing emotion.
I also used my focus group to inspire me and collect
ideas for my short film, and by doing so I found out that
people would be most likely to watch a short film about
music if:
the overall genre is happy or action
the music used is either rock or pop
if the story is hard hitting but with a happy ending

MY PRODUCTIONS
The production process was a very mixed experience as
there was more to consider than I had originally expected.
On top of all the regular work and planning it was also
important to consider the current regulations of the
pandemic- which compromised a lot of what I wanted to
do. It was very difficult to think of alternatives to what I
had envisioned for my short film but I ended up coping
just fine with my very small cast of people and limited
locations. One way of working around d this was to film
in college where there is no limit on how many people
THE PRODUCTION can be together so I adapted my story so that I could have
PROCESS this benefit.
The stop motion production was much more enjoyable
What was difficult and stress free as this could all be done at college and I
What I enjoyed didn’t need a cast of people. Although slightly tedious I
rather enjoyed making my stop motion as I had total
What went well
control over what happened in it and I didn’t have to rely
on anyone else. I think my stop motion is my better piece
of work from this unit as my end product is smooth,
understandable an achieved my goal of being educational.
Having received feedback from my class mates and
teachers I believe hat I did successfully reach my target
audience. I did this by ensuring that any facts and
statistics used were inclusive of people ages 14-24, and I
FEEDBACK also tried to make it clear that the main character in my
short film is also within that age category as I think this
makes it clear that addiction and not having the correct
outlet is something that could possibly effect people in
my target audience.
This unit and brief as a whole has taught me a lot
including to step out of my comfort zone and try new
things. It also taught me how to cope and handle stressful
situations such as having a lot of government guidelines
to work around in order to film, and as well as this it has
helped me develop my personal skills such as talking to
new people who i wouldn't have worked with otherwise.
I still have lots of improvements to make such as time
management skills, as unfortunately several of my shots
are out of focus and having managed my time better
MOVING FORWARD… would have allowed me to reshoot and tackle this issue.
However this process has also taught me to play to my
strengths which in both productions included picking
suitable music that fit perfectly given the topic. I also
learnt that I should step out as my comfort zone as by
doing this I produced some very good shots utilising
push and pull focus, which is something I didn’t think
would work a well as it did.
