Lesson 1: Introduction To IT Infrastructure

The document provides an introduction to IT infrastructure, defining it as the central nervous system that consists of all the physical and digital elements that support data management and usability across an enterprise. It discusses the evolution of IT infrastructure from mainframes to personal computers to client-server and cloud-based models. The key components of IT infrastructure are identified as hardware, software, networks, and human resources.

Lesson 1: Introduction to

IT Infrastructure
What is IT Infrastructure?
• IT Infrastructure is the central nervous system
• Consists of all the elements that support the management and
usability of data and information.
• include the physical hardware and facilities (including data
centers), data storage and retrieval, network systems, legacy
interfaces, and software to support the business goals of an
enterprise.
• The structure also includes hiring, training, policy, testing,
process, upgrades, and repairs.
Where IT Infrastructure needed?

• Infrastructure consists of facilities and services that are

needed across an entire enterprise.

• Enterprise
• ”business”
Why do we need IT Infrastructure in Enterprise?

• To increase the overall efficiency of the Organization’s operating components;

• In order to ensure good service and tremendous quality;
• ensure the information flow is processed in undisruptive way and managing
existing and new staff.
1. Moore's Law and Microprocessing Power
• Moore's law stated in 1965 that
microprocessing power doubles
every two years. Variations of
this law assert that
• Microprocessing power doubles
every 18 months
• Computer power doubles every
18 months
• The price of computing every 18
months.
Evolution of IT Infrastructure

1. General-Purpose Mainframe and minicomputer era

(1959-present)
2. Personal computer era (1981-present)
3. Client server era (1983-present)
4. Enterprise Internet (1992-present)
5. Cloud Computing era (2000-present)
1. General-Purpose Mainframe and
minicomputer era (1959-present)
• A minicomputer fills the space
between the mainframe and
microcomputer, and is smaller
than the former but larger than
the latter. ... Mainframes are a
type of computer that generally
are known for their large size,
amount of storage, processing
power and high level of
reliability.
2. Personal computer era (1981-present)

• Personal computer is a
small computer with a
microprocessor, designed for
use by an individual.
An example of personal
computers are
desktop computers used in
homes, schools and small
businesses.
3. Client server era (1983-present)

• The client-server model
describes how a server provides
resources and services to one or
more clients. Examples of
servers include web servers,
mail servers, and file servers.
Each of these servers provide
resources to client devices,
such as desktop computers,
laptops, tablets, and
smartphones.
4. Enterprise Internet (1992-present)

• The Internet networking technology

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) suite enables enterprises
to link disparate devices and local area
networks (LANs) into single enterprise-wide
networks. Integrated computing
environments allows for much faster and
seamless gathering and distribution of
data.
5. Cloud Computing era (2000-present)

• Model of computing
where firms and
individuals obtain
computing power and
software applications
over the Internet

2. Software

• Computer software, also called software, is a

set of instructions and its documentations that
tells a computer what to do or how to perform
a task. Software includes all
different software programs on a computer,
such as applications and the operating system.

3. Network
• A network is a collection of computers, servers,
mainframes, network devices, peripherals, or
other devices connected to one another to allow
the sharing of data. An excellent example of
a network is the Internet, which connects
millions of people all over the world.

4. Meatware
• Meatware: Human users, such as network
administrators (NA), developers, designers
and end users with access to any IT appliance
or service are also part of an IT
infrastructure, specifically with the advent of
user-centric IT service development.
