LESSON 17:

BASIC COMMANDS AND


TOOLS
Navigating the Document

The Artboard can be zoomed in or


out to manipulate fine elements of the
artwork. The Zoom tool and Hand tool
are used to navigate the document.

The zoom percentage is displayed in the document window


tab and status bar.

To Zoom In or Zoom Out an Artwork:


• Select the Zoom tool, drag on the
image to form a dotted rectangle,
called a marquee.
• Choose View   Zoom In or View  
Zoom Out.

• To display a file at 100%, choose View 


 Actual Size, or double-click the
Zoom tool.
• View   Fit In Window, or double-
click the Hand tool.
Hand Tool

• Select the Hand tool from the Tools


panel. Keyboard shortcut is “H”.
• Using the Hand tool, drag to scroll
around and view different parts of the
document
Selecting Objects

1. Selection tool allows selecting


objects and groups by clicking or
dragging them.

2. Direct selection tool allows selecting


individual anchor points or path
segments by clicking on them.

3. Group Selection Tool is used to select


objects and groups within groups.

4. Lasso Tool allows selecting objects,


anchor points, or path segments by
dragging around all or part of the
object.

5. Magic Wand allows selecting objects of


the same color, stroke weight, stroke
color, opacity, or blending mode by
clicking only one part of the object.

6. Artboard tool is used to create


separate artboards for printing and
exporting.
Working with Mistakes

There are some instances that mistakes


happen when working with a drawing.
The following are the commands and
tools helpful for some unwanted actions.
Undo and Redo Commands

The Undo and Redo commands cancel


or repeat actions. They allow correcting
mistakes while working on a document.
To do this, simply choose Edit  Undo
Move or Edit  Redo.

Delete Command
1. Choose the Selection tool ( ).
2. Select the object to delete and press
delete, clear or backspace key from
the keyboard.
Eraser Tool

Eraser tool allows modifying parts of


an illustration. Click and drag the Eraser
tool to erase part of an object. The tool
automatically erases the object and
closes the paths.
Symbols

Symbols are means of storing


frequently used artwork for use in
other artwork. It is stored in the
Symbols panel and can be reused

To Draw an Object and Create a Symbol


1. If the Layers panel is not visible, choose
Window  Layers. Click on the Leaves
layer to select it.
2. Select the Pencil tool from the Tools
panel. Click and draw a leaf shape,
starting and ending on the same point.

3. From the Control panel, click on Fill and


choose the Dark Green swatch from the
Swatches panel that appears. With the
Selection tool, ALT (Windows) or OPTION
(Mac) drag two (2) copies of the leaf
drawn.

4. If the Color panel is not visible, choose


Window  Color. Select the other
copied leaves and change the color fill in
the Color panel to a lighter green.

5. If the symbols panel is not visible, choose


Window  Symbols. With the Selection tool,
select the darkest green leaf and drag it into
the symbols panel.

6. When the Symbols Options dialog box


appears, enter “leaf1” for the Name.
Choose Graphic as the Type. Click OK to
create the symbols.
7. Repeat the above steps to create
symbols for the copied leaves and name
the 75% green leaf “leaf2” and the 50%
leaf, “leaf3”.

Symbol Sizer and Spinner tools can


be used to alter the look of individual
symbol instances.

There are seven symbolism tools


hidden inside the Symbol Sprayer tool.
Symbolism tools are used for changing
the density, color, location, size, rotation,
transparency or style of symbol sets.

Now, go back to the activity and


select the “leaf1” symbol set and edit
the leaves using the Symbol Sizer and
Symbol Spinner tools.

1. In the Layers panel, click in the top symbol


sets selection column to select the symbol
set.

2. Click the Symbol


Sprayer tool and select
the Sizer tool then drag
over the symbol
instances to scale up
some of the leaves. Hold Resizing with the Sizer Tool
down ALT using the
Symbol Sizer.

3. Now, rotate some of the


symbols.
4. Select the Symbol
Spinner tool and click
and drag over the leaves
to rotate. Rotating the Leaves Using
the Symbolism Tools
5. Choose File Save.
