Disease
 1st known case of coronavirus was reported in Wuhan City, China, in December
2019.
 India reported the first confirmed case of the coronavirus infection on 30 January
2020 in the state of Kerala.
 Odisha reported the first case of COVID – 19 on 15th March 2020
 India has highest number of COVID -19 cases after United States, which accounts
for 13.33% of the total cases around the globe.

 A biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a
particular infectious disease

 the administration of a vaccine to help the immune system develop protection
from a disease
VACCINATION IN INDIA
 Three vaccine makers have applied for regulatory
approvals of their respective coronavirus vaccines in the
country for emergency authorization –
1. Bharat Biotech
2. Serum Institute of India
3. Pfizer
 Covaxin, India's indigenous COVID-19 vaccine by Bharat
Biotech is developed in collaboration with ICMR and NIV.
 Serum Institute of India has partnered with global
pharma giant AstraZeneca and the Oxford University for
COVID-19 vaccine – Covishield.
 With an efficacy rate of 90%, Covishield can be stored
at normal refrigerated temperatures of between 2°C
and 8°C
 BNT162b2, vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech has an efficacy rate of 91%
 Vaccine produced by Moderna, US-based biotechnology company provides 94%
efficacy.
 Vaccines by both Pfizer and Moderna would need to be stored at sub-zero
levels ( -80°C to -20°C )
 Sputnik V is the world's first registered vaccine developed by The Gamaleya
National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Russia.
 The clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine (in partnership with Dr. Reddy)
shows an efficacy of 91.4%
 India's second vaccine under development, Ahmedabad based Zydus Cadila's
novel ZyCoV-D has completed phase 2 trials.

GUIDELINES
 The government of India has issued 113 pages guidelines for COVID-19
vaccination drive in India
 Covid Vaccine Intelligence Network (Co-WIN) system, a digitalised platform,
will be used to track enlisted beneficiaries for the vaccination on a real-time
basis
 Twelve photo-identity documents, including Voter ID, Aadhar card, driving
license, passport and pension document, will be required for self-registration
on the Co-WIN website or app.
 up to 100-200 people will be vaccinated in each session per day
 At the vaccination site, only pre-registered beneficiaries, one at a time, will
be vaccinated in accordance with the prioritization
 there will be no provision for on-the-spot registrations
 Each volunteer will be monitored for 30 minutes after administering the
vaccine shots for any adverse event from the inoculation

 3.2 lakh health workers and ICDS (Integrated Child
Development Service) workers will be vaccinated in the
first phase.
 in each centre, 100-200 health workers and ICDS workers
will be vaccinated.
 In each vaccination centre, one vaccinator, one vaccine
officer, one verifier and two supervisors will be engaged.
 For safe storage of the vaccines, Odisha has one state-level
vaccine store, 9 regional stores and 32 district-level stores.
 For smooth conduct of the vaccination, the state
government has formed the task force at the state and
district level.
 Once the vaccination is completed, the receiver will be
issued with a certificate, which will be useful during travel
and other documentation purposes with regard to Covid
vaccine
