Machine Drawing - 15Me34D: Unit - 1 - Conventional Representation

The document provides information about standard conventions used in machine drawings according to SP-46 (1988). It discusses representing different materials with distinct section lining conventions and using long and short breaks in pipes, rods, and shafts to shorten views. It also describes various section types like full, half, revolved, and removed sections used to show internal features. Finally, it mentions using standard conventions to efficiently represent common machine elements like knurling, splined shafts, gears, and springs.

MACHINE DRAWING – 15ME34D

UNIT -1 CONVENTIONAL REPRESENTATION

SYLLABUS: [ALLOTTED TIME - 04Hrs]

 Standard convention using SP – 46 (1988), Materials - C.I., M.S, Brass, Bronze,

Aluminum, Wood, Glass, Concrete and Rubber.
 Long and short break in pipe, rod and shaft.
 Various sections- Half, removed.
 Standard convention of Knurling, splined shafts, and chain wheels, Springs with
square and flat ends, Gears, sprocket wheel.
 Standard convention of representing Countersunk & counter bore
STANDARD CONVENTION USING SP – 46 (1988):

Certain drafting conventions are used to represent materials in section and

machine elements in engineering drawings. As a variety of materials are used for
machine components in engineering applications, it is preferable to have different
conventions of section lining to differentiate between various materials. The
recommended conventions in use as per BIS SP-46 [Engineering Drawing Practice
for Schools & Colleges] are shown in next slide.
LONG AND SHORTBREAK IN PIPE,ROD, AND SHAFT :

To shorten the view of a long object, break lines are used.

VARIOUS SECTIONS;

In order to show the inner details of a machine component, the object is imagined to
be cut by a cutting plane and the section is viewed after the removal of cut portion.
Sections are made by cutting planes and are designated by capital letters and the
direction of viewing is indicated by arrow marks. Cutting plane is a plane that
imaginarily cuts the object to reveal the internal features.

TYPES OF SECTIONS:

1. Full section
2. Top half in section
3. Bottom half in section
4. Right half in section
5. Left half in section
6. Revolved section
7. Removed section
FULL SECTION OR SECTIONAL VIEW
REVOLVED SECTION VIEW:
Revolved sections show cross-sectional features of a part. The cutting plane is
passed perpendicular to the axis of the part to be cut. The cut portion is revolved
90º and drawn in this position
REMOVED SECTION VIEW:
This type of section is a revolved section drawn outside of the normal view. They are
used if there is restricted space for section or dimensioning prevents the use of an
ordinary rotated section.
STANDARD CONVENTIONS FOR REPRESENTING STANDARD MACHINE ELEMENTS:

When the drawing of a component in its true projection involves a lot of time, its
convention may be used to represent the actual component. Table shows typical
examples of conventional representation of various machine components used in
machine drawing.
