MIS Tutorial 3 Q3

The SDLC is a series of phases used to develop information systems: 1) Planning identifies business needs and opportunities 2) Analysis determines system requirements and recommends solutions 3) Design develops the system to meet requirements 4) Implementation delivers a functioning system tested by users 5) Operation and maintenance supports the system with repairs, upgrades, and security The SDLC is effective as it encourages discipline, communication between developers and users, and emphasizes analysis and design to ensure business needs are met.

Tutorial 3

Question 3
Q 3a: How does the system development
life cycle (SDLC) works?
• System development life cycle (SDLC) is a series of steps that
companies use to build an information system.
• Its also known as application development life cycle.
• It’s a series of phases to plan, analyze, design, implement and
support an information system.
• SDLC is a waterfall model. That means each phase appears to be
connected by another phase by their inputs and outputs. For
example, output of system planning (first phase) will be the input
of system design (second phase).
Q 3b: Describe the 5 phases of the
Systems development Life Cycle
(SDLC).
Phase 1 : System Planning (Preliminary Investigation)
Phase 2 : System Analysis
Phase 3 : System Design
Phase 4 : System Implementation
Phase 5 : System Operation, Support & Security
(Maintenance)
1st phase : System Planning

• Purpose : To identify the nature and scope of the business

opportunity or problem.
• Firstly, SDLC starts with a written request (system request), that
identifies the needs of an information system or describes the
desired changes or improvement by the management concern
(the end user).
• End product : Preliminary investigation report.
2nd phase : System Analysis

 Purpose : To learn how the current system operates, to determine

and document what the system should do and to recommend
alternatives solutions.
 This phase will define all the functions performed by the current
system and determine what improvement need to be made. Then,
system analysis will analyse them carefully. Later, system analysis
will generate a specific plan to solve the problems in the current
system.
 End product : System requirements document (includes the users
3rd phase : System Design

 Purpose : To develop a system design that can satisfy all the

users and management requirement.
 This phase will identify all necessary outputs, inputs, files,
application programs and even the manual procedures.
 It also include designing of internal and external controls to
ensure that the system will be accurate, secure and reliable.
 End product : Design specification.
4th phase : System Implementation

 Purpose : To deliver a completely functioning and documented

information system that has been reviewed and approved.
 In this phase, the application programs are written, tested and
documented; operational documentation and procedures are
completed; and approval is obtained from users and management.
 The users will also convert from the old system and perform the new
system.
 End product : Tested programs that have been verified by the users.
5th phase : System Operation, Support &
Security

 Purpose : To repair, upgrade and protect the system as

necessary.
 This phase will resolve problems identified by the users. Some
maintenance changes will be made to correct the errors or to
conform to government or users requirements.
 End product: The modified system.
Q 3c : Explain 2 reasons why SDLC is an
effective means of developing new
information system.

 To encourage discipline during the development process,

communication between the developers & users, and
recognition of the importance of analysis and design.

 Developing a new information system by using SDLC is

important because it can ensure the business needs are met
and business problems are solved.
