•REDIRECT IS A STRATEGY THAT WORKS AS A DIVERSION.


IF YOUR CHILD IS STUCK ON A SITUATION, “REDIRECT IS A
FORM OF WHICH AN ADULT IMMEDIATELY DOES
SOMETHING TO DISTRACT A CHILD FROM THE FORBIDDEN
OR DANGEROUS ACTIVITY.” (MARION 2019)

•IN AN AUTISM CLASSROOM, WE USE A VARIETY OF


VISUALS TO REDIRECT. FOR EXAMPLE WE HAVE CHOICE
BOARDS OF REINFORCERS AND ASK, “WHAT ARE YOU
WORKING FOR?”. SOMETIMES WE NEED A STRONGER CUE
AND USE A “FIRST, THEN” VISUAL THAT HELPS THE CHILD
STAY ON TASK FOR THEIR REINCFORCER.

•VERBAL- GIVE SIMPLE INSTRUCTION TO


DISTRACT THE CHILD FROM INAPPROPRIATE
BEHAVIOR
•PHYSICAL- GENTLE TOUCH TO PREVENT

• IGNORING AN INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR IS TRICKY. YOU WANT TO
IGNORE THE SPECIFIC BEHAVIOR, NOT THE CHILD IN GENERAL.

• ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE TOOLS WE USE IN AN AUTISM CLASS IS


THAT WE GIVE CALM DOWN TOOLS IN A CALMING AREA WHEN THEY
ARE BEING AGGRESSIVE. AS LONG AS THE BEHAVIOR IS NOT
DANGEROUS OR HARMFUL TO ANYONE, WE PLAN IGNORE. MEANING
WE ARE PLANNING TO GET THE CHILD BACK TO A CALM STATE.
• CESFEL HAD GREAT TOOLS FOR FEELINGS TO POST IN A CALMING
AREA.
•“CHILDREN NEED MORE THAN LIMITS- THEY ALSO NEED ENCOURAGEMENT
FOR THEIR EFFORTS TO ACCEPT LIMITS AND TO BEHAVE IN A PROSOCIAL
WAY, COOPERATIVELY OR HELPFULLY” (MARION, 2019)

ENCOURAGE •CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM DO NOT OFTEN UNDERSTAND “GOOD


EFFORTS JOB”. IN MY CLASS, WE DO A LOT OF PHYSICAL AND VERBAL PRAISE TO
SHOW THEM THEY ARE DOING WELL. REPEATING THE TASK THEY DID WELL
WITH A HIGH FIVE OR A CHEERFUL GESTURE HELPS THE CHILD UNDERSTAND
THAT THEY DOING THE CORRECT TASK OR BEHAVING APPROPRIATELY.
SUMMARY

THERE ARE A VARIETY OF POSITIVE STRATEGIES THAT CAN BE USED TO HELP A


CHILD LEARN TO COPE WITH THEIR FEELINGS AND LEARN TO COMMUNICATE
APPROPRIATELY. OUR JOB AS EDUCATORS IS TO HELP GUIDE THEM THROUGH
DIFFERENT STRATEGIES AND THEORIES. NOT ONE CHILD IS THE SAME AND
THEY DO NOT ALL RESPOND TO EVERY STRATEGY THE SAME WAY, HOWEVER,
KNOWING THERE ARE DIFFERENT TACTICS TO USE WE CAN FIND THE ONE
THAT WORKS FOR EACH OF THEIR NEEDS. ESTABLISHING A RELATIONSHIP
WITH OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND THEM
BETTER. WHEN GIVEN THESE SITUATIONS WE SHOULD SEE THEM AS
OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND GROW.
