Interview
 Is the conversation between two sides where questions
are asked and answers are given.
 In Journalism Interview is a meeting or conversation in
which a writer or reporter asks questions of one or more
persons from whom material is sought for a newspaper
story, television broadcast, etc.
 The journalistic interview is a specific type of
informative interview where the interviewer asks and
conducts interviews with one or more "sources" to gather
supporting material for a news story.

 The journalistic interview is a specific type of
informative interview where the interviewer asks and
conducts interviews with one or more "sources" to gather
supporting material for a news story. Journalistic
interviews are conducted for nearly all forms of
mediated news reporting including newspapers,
magazines, television, radio and online media.
HOW TO CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW

1. BEFORE THE INTERVIEW


• Be familiar about the topic (familiarizing yourself with
the topic as much background as possible)
• If it is outdoor interview make sure that both interviewer
and interviewee are confident with the environment
• Prepare preliminary questions
• Find a note book or recording device
• Brief the source about the topic
2. DURING THE INTERVIEW

 Create rapport with your source


• Give your source his/her credibility
• Start with the simple questions (Basic Questions)
• Do not humiliate your source unless she/he is a difficult
source
• Control your source
• Decorate your interview by asking surprising questions
• If is a multiple sources interview treat all the sources
equally
3. AFTER THE INTERVIEW

 Keep in touch with the source


Other methods
(a)Apply observation method of news gathering 
 Consist of your actually seeing an event take place and
then reporting what you have seen in the form of a news
story. The different of a good and bad story depends on
the skills of the observer
OBSERVATION METHOD CONT…..
 When a journalist wants to observe he or she should use
their eyes, ears, mind, notebooks and tape recorders.
They have to make sure that they get the concrete facts,
Specific figures and accurate information.
 In additional skilled observer always try to get more
information than they actually need. To develop your
power of observation can come only through experience;
you need not only to read books but to look for more
than you see on the surface.
 

B. TELEPHONE CONVERSATION  

 It plays an important role in your daily work as a


journalist; it save your time also will enable a journalist
to reach people who are too far away.
TELEPHONE CONVERSATION CONT…..
 When you choose this method a journalist should do the following
1.Know what information you want to get before you dial, keep your
pencil and paper near you. Do not call your source and then wait
him or her up.
2.Speak politely, use a very modulate tones
3.Get to know your facts straight and clear, if you don’t get it then
ask your source to repeat i.e. names, figure
3.Avoid three ways conversation among yourself, the person on the
telephone and somebody else in your office.
4.Record the conversation using a telephone “pick-up”. But you have
to inform your source before recording for just note taking only.
5.Do not discuss too much as you are making stories.

be files or reference works. Research used to verify of
amplify facts in news stories and to give depth to feature
stories. Use libraries hence you find necessary books,
encyclopedias, almanacs, magazines, indexed.
