Module 1 - Pp. 1-7 Presentation Prepared By: Jean V. Sucuano

This module introduces key concepts about functions and functional relationships through examples. It explains that [1] a relation is a set of ordered pairs where the first elements form the domain and second elements form the range, and [2] a function is a relation where each domain element corresponds to exactly one range element. Tables and graphs are used to illustrate functional relationships, where a vertical line test can identify graphs of functions based on intersecting at one point.

Module 1 – pp.

1-7

Presentation prepared by:

Jean V. Sucuano
Module 1 – p.1

After going through this module, you are expected

to:
1. recall the concepts of relations and functions;
2. define and explain functional relationship as a
mathematical model of situation; and
3. represent real-life situations using functions,
including piece-wise function.
Module 1 – pp.1-4
• Please answer the pre-assessment test you can find on Module
1: Functions, What I know on pages 1-4. To answer, you can
either:

• Write your answers on the answer sheet provided in

the module or;
• Open the link: http://bit.ly/M1FunctionsPreTest,;

• If you have done answering, then let us proceed.

Module 1 – p.5
Module 1 – p.5

A relation domain
is any set of
ordered pairs.
The set of all first
{(1,-2) , (3,-4) , (5,-6)}
elements of the ordered
pairs is called the domain.
And the set of all second
elements is called
range
range.
Module 1 – p.5

A function is a relation
or rule of correspondence between two
elements (domain and range)
such that each element in the domain
corresponds to exactly one element
in the range.
To further understand function , let’s
study the examples in the next slides…
Module 1 – p.5

Given the following ordered pairs, which

relations are functions?
You’re right!
• A = {(1,2), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5)} The relations A and B
are functions.
• B = {(3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6)}
because each element in
• C = {(1,0), (0, 1), (-1,0), (0,-1)} the domain corresponds to
a unique element in the
• D = {(a,b), (b, c), (c,d), (a,d)} range.
Module 1 – p.5

• A = {(1,2), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5)}

The domain in A are {1,2,3,4)
• B = {(3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6)}
while in B are {3,4,5,6}
and as you see, the elements of domain in A and in B are
different from each other.

Hence, the relations A and B are functions.

Module 1 – p.5

Given the following ordered pairs, which

relations are functions?
• A = {(1,2), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5)} Meanwhile,
The relations C and D
• B = {(3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6)} are NOT functions.
• C = {(1,0), (0, 1), (-1,0), (0,-1)} because they contain
ordered pairs with the
• D = {(a,b), (b, c), (c,d), (a,d)} same domain.
Module 1 – p.5
• C = {(1,0), (0, 1), (-1,0), (0,-1)}
In C, the ordered pairs (0,1) and (0,-1)
have the same domain which is 0.
While in D, the ordered pairs (a,b) and (a,d)

• D = {(a,b), (b, c), (c,d), (a,d)}

also have the same domain which is a.
Hence, the relations C and D are NOT functions because
they have ordered pairs that have the same domain.
Module 1 – p.6

How about the given tables, which relation

shows a function?

A. y 2 4 6 8 10 12 Tables A and B are
functions…
X 4 -3 1 2 5

since all values of x corresponds
to exactly one value of y,

Hence, tables A and B are functions, while table C is not.

We can also identify a function through diagrams.

On the following diagrams, which do you
think represent functions?

A graph of a relation is a function
if any Vertical Line passing through the graph
intersects it at exactly
