Dr. Madhanraj V Asst. Prof. (S.S.)

This document is a lecture on compressible aerodynamics given by Dr. Madhanraj V of the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science. It discusses flow characteristics through a converging-diverging nozzle under different back pressure conditions, including how the flow accelerates up to the throat, remains critical at certain back pressures, and forms shock waves when the back pressure is off design values. Curves a through j represent flow behavior for increasing back pressure values.

Curve a and b- Flow is accelerating upto the throat and in diverging part section back pressure rises.

Curve c – Critical conditions are reached but the back pressure still exists.

Curve d and e – discontinuity in the flow occurs due to off design value of back pressure. The flow readjusts itself
by making it subsonic- shock waves formation.

Curve f and g – shock wave moves downstream till it reaches exit.

Curve i and j – back pressure lower than the nozzle exit pressure.
