Module II-Solved Problem.5

The document is a lecture on Module II by Mr. E.T. Chullai from the School of Aeronautical Sciences at Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science in Chennai. It discusses shock induced boundary layer separation, noting that a shock wave causes an adverse pressure gradient which can thicken and potentially detach the boundary layer from the surface. The lecture also examines the effects of compression and expansion waves on the boundary layer.

SHOCK INDUCED SEPERATION

A shock wave for a boundary layer means a sharp

adverse pressure gradient. Adverse pressure
gradient will thicken a boundary layer and thick
boundary layers are more prone to separation. Also,
if the adverse pressure gradient is so strong, it can
immediately produce a detachment of the flow from
the wall.
