WHY WOULD SOMEONE COMMIT SELF
INJURY?
• WE CAN FIND OUT WHY SOMEONE COMMITS SELF INJURY BY UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF THE
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTAL, BIOLOGICAL, COGNITIVE, AFFECTIVE, AND BEHAVIOR
FACTORS. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, FOR EXAMPLE: THE PRESENCE OF FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE A HISTORY
OF MENTAL DISORDERS, SELF-INJURY , OR SUICIDE; EXPERIENCING CONFLICT IN RELATIONSHIPS; HAVE PEERS WHO
COMMIT SELF-INJURY ; EXPERIENCING SEXUAL HARASSMENT, ETC. BIOLOGICAL FACTORS FOR EXAMPLE: LIMBIC
SYSTEM DYSFUNCTION, SEROTONIN LEVEL DYSFUNCTION, DECREASED SENSITIVITY TO PAIN, ETC. COGNITIVE
FACTORS, FOR EXAMPLE: HAVING PESSIMISTIC THOUGHTS AND BELIEFS ("NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ME, ONLY SELF
INJURY CAN RELIEVE MY FEELINGS").
• AFFECTIVE FACTORS, FOR EXAMPLE: THE PRESENCE OF EMOTIONS RELATED TO PAST TRAUMA; SUSCEPTIBILITY TO
FEELING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS SUCH AS ANGER, HOPELESSNESS, ANXIETY, ETC. BEHAVIORAL FACTORS, FOR
EXAMPLE: BEHAVIOR BEFORE SELF INJURY (CONFLICT WITH OTHER PEOPLE, USING NARCOTICS, WITHDRAWAL),
BEHAVIOR AFTER THE DESIRE FOR SELF INJURY APPEARS (PREPARING THE LOCATION AND TOOLS TO PERFORM SELF
INJURY ), AND BEHAVIOR AFTER SELF INJURY (RETURNING DOING ACTIVITIES, SLEEPING, AND TELLING OTHERS
ABOUT THE SELF-INJURY THAT WAS DONE). BY UNDERSTANDING THE REASONS BEHIND SELF INJURY BEHAVIORAND
THE PATTERN THAT IS DONE, THEN WE CAN HELP AND SUPPORT SOMEONE WHO DOES SELF INJURY TO STOP DOING
IT.
HOW TO TREAT SELF INJURY
• SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THINGS THAT HAVE A POSITIVE MEANING TO YOU, FOR EXAMPLE: PHOTOS OF SOMEONE
YOU CARE ABOUT, NOTES CONTAINING EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE / SUPPORT FROM YOURSELF OR FROM FAMILY OR
FRIENDS, AROMATHERAPY THAT CAN CALM YOU DOWN.
• TAKE YOUR MIND OFF THE SELF INJURY BY LISTENING TO MUSIC, DRAWING, OR WRITING.
• RESET YOUR THOUGHTS: “WHO AM I REALLY ANGRY WITH? WHAT MAKES ME SO SAD? I FEEL SAFE BECAUSE I AM IN
CONTROL. "
• IDENTIFY SITUATIONS LIKE WHAT TRIGGER YOU TO COMMIT SELF INJURY . ASK FOR HELP FROM OTHERS TO HELP YOU.
• WHILE THERE IS STILL THE DESIRE TO FEEL THE SENSATION OF SELF-HARM. USE OTHER METHODS THAT ARE NOT AS
BAD AS SELF INJURY. FOR EXAMPLE: HOLDING ICE CUBES, SHREDDING PAPER, SMOKING A LEMON WEDGE, OR
BANGING A PILLOW.
• FORGIVE YOURSELF WHO HAVE COMMITTED SELF INJURY . FORGIVE YOURSELF WHO MAY EXPERIENCE SEVERAL
FAILURES WHEN YOU WANT TO STOP SELF INJURY. BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH SELF INJURY CAN BE TREATED, IN FACT IT
IS NOT EASY AND REQUIRES A PROCESS.
• CONSIDER SEEING A PSYCHOLOGIST OR PSYCHIATRIST IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING TROUBLE CONTROLLING YOUR
URGE TO SELF-INJURY .
