MATHEMATICS LABORATORY

• Mathematics is a wide-spread material needed by
the human being in his daily life
• Mathematics is a building block for every science
that student can learn it in schools and universities.
• Students usually have difficulties in learning
mathematics due to math abstractness
• Using Teaching Aids (TA) as a tool to help the
instructor in explaining the lecture in the classroom
What are mathematical teaching aids?

• The instruments, tools, equipments and


different material used for teaching and
learning of maths in a better way are called as
mathematical teaching aids.
• Example- blocks, geometry box, calculator,
shapes, beads, slate etc.
• TA makes the material of Mathematics
become an interesting subject and students
feel comfortable
• Teaching materials are important catalysts of
instructions
• It is one of the wonderful teaching tools which
is very convenient in the classroom
TYPES OF TA
• 1. Visual: It is one of the tools that students can grow the
accurate image when the students see and hear properly
(Giaquinto, 2007).
• For example, movable images whiteboard, global or earth
shows us the distance between two cities or countries and
measurements; etc.
• 2. Audio equipment: local radio school, speaker, microphone
and radio (Kafyulilo, 2014).
• 3. Audiovisual: This is a modern tool for easy to
understanding. Such as; animated film, Poster, Television,
Video, Acting and theater (Musacchia et al., 2007).
• some groups are related to the TA in teaching
Mathematics as, field trip or excursion, the
science exhibition, and the school exhibition.
• Field trip: A journey by a group of people to a
place away from their normal environment
• The science exhibition: Includes all activities
that work in the school in which all teachers
and students participated
Types of an exhibition
1Classroom gallery.
2. School show.
3. Exhibition at the level of the governorate.
4. Exhibition at the level of the state.
5. International exhibitions.
Categories of Mathematical Teaching AIDS

• Personal Equipments: E.g Text Books Writing


Equipments Drawing instruments– pencil,
crayons, sketch pens, stencils etc. Measuring
instruments– Ruler, Protractor etc. Slide rule Log
tables Calculators. Cds , computer, radio, TV etc.
• Equipments used in groups: Blocks. Beads.
Cubes. Dominoes . Cards. Dice. 2D, 3D shapes.
Blackboard. Charts. Fractional parts. Number kit.
Radio, TV, CDS, DVDS etc.
CRITERIA OF SELECTION OF TEACHING AIDS

• While selecting any aid the teacher should assess the


aids on following criteria,
1. aid should be appropriate.
2. aid should be economical
3. aid should be attractive
4. aid should be easy to handle
5. teaching aids should be simple and brief.
6. Teaching aids should be related to the objectives of
teaching

7.Teaching aids should be big door to be seen by all the
students.

8.Teacher must use proper teaching aids according to


the interest of the student.

9. Teaching aids should be prepared and planned in advance.

10. Teaching aids should be properly selected according to


the physical and mental level of the student.

11. Teaching aids should be colorful and should have direct


impact on the lesson.
12. Teaching aids should be meaningful and interesting.
Characteristics of Good Teaching Aids

A few characteristics of good teaching aids are as follows :-

1) Teaching aids are large enough to be seen by the students for whom they are
used.

2) Teaching aids are meaningful and they always stand to serve a useful
purpose.

3) Teaching aids are up to the mark and up to date in every respect.

4) Teaching aids are simple , cheap and may be improvised.

5) Teaching aids are accurate and realistic.

7) Their purpose may be informative but it is not just entertainment.

8) Teaching aids helps in realization of stipulated learning objects.

9) Teaching aids are really very useful and can be used in many
lessons and at different class levels.

10) Teaching aids are useful for supplementing the teaching process
but they cannot replace the teacher.
THE ADVANTAGES OF TA
• Developing the level of the student's mind and
thinking.
• Keep all information in the mind students for a
long time.
• Makes the student perform the activities on his /
her own.
• Developing the students’ mind.
• Give full understanding and accuracy of the
lesson.

• Teaching aids help in the development of various skills such as, how


to draw a diagram of the topic among the students.
