Lec 3. Teaching of Mathematics

This document discusses various methods of teaching mathematics, including inductive, deductive, analytic, synthetic, heuristic, project, and problem solving methods. It provides examples of the inductive-deductive method and analytic-synthetic method. The inductive method proceeds from specific examples to general rules, while the deductive method proceeds from general rules to specific conclusions. The analytic method breaks problems down from the unknown to the known, while the synthetic method builds up from the known components.

Methods of Teaching Mathematics

•Inductive Method
•Deductive Method
•Analytic method
•Synthetic Method
•Heuristic Method
•Project Method
•Problem Solving Method
Inductive-Deductive Method
Inductive method:
• based on the process of induction
• examples to the rule
• specific to general
• concrete to absract
• e.g sum of angles of triangle is 180o
Deductive Method:
• exact opposite of the inductive method
• rule or generalization or formula is given at the very
beginning
Cont.
• formula or rule is accepted as the universal truth
• e.g In triangle PQR, measure of angle P is 50o,
the measure of angle Q is 75o.Find the measure
of angle R?
• Induction and deduction are complementary to
one another
• Began with inductive method and then this must
be followed by sufficient practice using the
deductive method.
Analytic – Synthetic Method
Analytical Method:
• word analysis means ―separate things that are together or
―Breaking up of a given problem
• start from what is to be found or proved
• proceed from “Unknown to Known”
• Unfolding of a problem to find its hidden aspect
• Suitable;
o to prove any theorem,
o for construction problems (prove that 4 points form a square;
10,10/20,10/20,20/10,20 =(x1-x2) +(Y2-Y1)
o To find out solutions of new arithmetical problems (age related
question)
• Example:
• if a2+b2=7ab prove that 2log (a+b) = 2log3+loga+logb
• Proof:
• To prove this using analytic method, begin from the unknown.
• The unknown is 2log (a+b) = 2log3+loga+logb
• Now, 2log (a+b) = 2log 3+ log a+ log b is true
• If log (a+b)2 = log 32 + log a + log b is true
• If log (a+b)2 = log 9 + log ab is true
• If log (a+b)2 = log 9ab is true
• If (a+b)2 = 9ab is true
• if a2+b2=7ab which is known and true
Synthetic Method
• synthesis simply means, ―To place things
together or to join separate parts.
• proceed from ―known to unknown.
• method of formulation
• hypothesis to conclusion
• concrete to abstract
• Example :
• if a2+b2=7ab prove that 2log (a+b) = 2log3+loga+logb
• Proof:
• To prove this using synthetic method, begin from the known.
• The known is a2+b2= 7ab
• Adding  2ab on both sides
• a2+b2+2ab=7ab + 2ab
• (a+b)2 = 9ab
• Taking log on both sides
• log (a+b)2      =       log 9ab
• 2log (a+b)     =       log 9 + log ab
• 2 log (a+b)    =       log 32 + log a + log b
• 2log (a+b)     =       2log 3+ log a+ log b
