5 Levels of Computer Skills

• Fundamental Skills
• Basic Computing and Applications
• Intermediate Computing and Applications

Fundamental Skills

No previous computer experience is necessary. These lessons are


appropriate for anyone just getting started with computers

Two necessary skills to get fundamental level:


• Typing
• Mouse
Basic Computing and Applications Skills

Basic computer skills, as defined by the ICAS Computer Skills


Assessment Framework include Internet and email, computers, word
processing, graphics and multimedia, and spreadsheets

Learners should complete the Fundamentals computer skills lessons


before proceeding to the basic level
Basic Computing and Applications Skills

Need to know:
• Internet surfing skills
• Email sending
• Word processing and formatting
• Presentations, Graphics and Multimedia base levels
• Work with Spreadsheets
Intermediate Computing and Applications
Skills

Intermediate computer skills, as defined by the ICAS Computer Skills


Assessment Framework include Internet and email, computers, word
processing, graphics and multimedia, and spreadsheets and
databases

Learners should complete the Basic computer skills lessons before


proceeding to the intermediate level
Intermediate Computing and Applications
Skills

Need to know:
• Computer terminology
• Software concepts
• Databases
Advanced Computing and Applications Skills

Advanced computer skills, as defined by the ICAS Computer Skills


Assessment Framework include Internet and email, computers, word
processing, graphics and multimedia, and spreadsheets and
databases

Learners should complete the Intermediate computer skills lessons


before proceeding to the advanced level
Advanced Computing and Applications Skills

• Understand purpose and process for upgrade installation


• Recognize purpose of different views of databases
• Understand operating systems performance indicators: disk space;
alert boxes; warnings; viruses; memory; CPU
• Understand use of flash drives; memory cards
• Understand image capturing: digital cameras; screen shots
Proficient Computing, Applications, and
Programming Skills

Proficient computer skills, as defined by the ICAS Computer Skills


Assessment Framework include Internet and email, computers, word
processing, graphics and multimedia, spreadsheets and databases,
and programming and scripting

Learners should complete the Advanced computer skills lessons


before proceeding to the proficient level
Proficient Computing, Applications, and
Programming Skills

• Understand connectivity: Wireless; Bluetooth; broadband; dial up


• Understand mail merge
• Recognize and understand sequence; conditionals; loops
• Understand variables; events
• Understand simple algorithms
Proficient Computing, Applications, and
Programming Skills

• Understand absolute/relative/circular references in spreadsheets


• Create ‘if statement’ formulas
• Create complex graphs/charts/tables
• Know how to work across multiple spreadsheets
• Demonstrate aesthetic judgement in use of tools for image
creation and manipulation
