INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIP

• As a part of the VTU curriculum we attended for internship training programme in your
industry for a period in our vacation time from JULY 9 th 2018 to AUG 4th 2018. This is a
very great initiative by the VTU as this decreases the gap between the theoretical and
practical knowledge of the students.

• This internship program gives the students to blend the theoretical knowledge acquired in
classroom and with practical hands on application of knowledge required to perform work
in industry. Also it prepares the student for employment and makes the transition from
college to the world of work easier after graduation.

• Thus as per this compulsory internship program for CBCS students by VTU, we did our
internship program at Centura Precision Components, Satyamangala, Tumkuru,
Karnataka.
• COMPANY PROFILE

• Today the company is one of the leading manufactures in fuel injection, Hydraulic, and other precision components.

• The company was earlier established the year of 1994 as “centura watch cases” (CWC) private limited. CWC ventured into the manufacturing of
Automobile component during it is diversification program in the year 2004.

• With the advent of time, knowledge and experience, The auto components manufacturing facilities was formed into a separate company called
“Centura precision components” (CPC) In the year of 2013.CPC is located in Tumkur a major industrial centre about of 40 miles from Bangalore-
Information technology capital of India.

• The company is accredited with ISO-9001:2015 Certification. CPC is today at the forefront of manufacturing Automobile components with quality
and high precision for its highly esteemed customers.

• VISION
• We want to simply be the most preferred Automobile, Hydraulic, and other Precision components manufacturing company.

• MISSION OF COMPANY
DEPARTMENTS OF CPC
• There are four major departments in CPC, they are

• Raw Material department

• Production department
• Assembly department
• Inspection department
• Service department

• RAW-MATERIAL DEPARTMENT:
• A raw material, also known as a feedstock or mostly correctly unprocessed material, is a basic material that is
used to produce goods, finished products, energy, or intermediate material which are feedstock for feature
finished products.
• The following materials are used as raw materials in CPC:
• MILD STEEL :
BRASS:
• Mixing the metals copper and zinc together makesbrass such a mixture of
metals is called an alloy Brass is often used to make tools and machine parts
sculptors and other artists use brass because it is easy to shape.
• Aluminium is a relatively soft, durable, light weight, ductile and malleable
metals with appearance ranging from silvery to dull gray depending on the
surface roughness .it is most widely used in Automobiles, aircrafts ,trucks,
railway, seat, tube and casting.

• IRON:
• Fig2.1 Aluminium
• PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT:
• Aims and functions of production department. Production is the functional area responsible for turning inputs into finished
outputs through a series of production process.

• The following machines are used for production in CPC

• CNC machine without feed bar

• CNC machine with feed bar
• CNC machine
• Sand blasting machineSlotting machine
• Drilling machine
• Bench grinder
• Hand press

• Fig.2.3 Operating CNC machine
• CNC machine without feed bar:
• The without bar feeder is not to deliver a continuous supply of machining stock to the machine tools. Generally applied to turning machines, they can also be applied to VMCs allowing the
machining centre to overcome the production limits of table size.

• CNC machine
• CNC machining is a processes used in the manufacturing sector that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. Tools that can be controlled in this manner include lathes, mills, routers
and grinders. The CNC in CNC machining stands for “computer numerical control.

• The CNC controller is brain of CNC system. A controller completes the all-important link between a computer system and the mechanical components of a CNC machines.

• ASSEMBLY DEPARTMENT:
• This is one of the major departments of any kind of manufacturing company. In this department all the finished products are brought and placed. Then this products are cleaned properly.
• Now the assembly work is done. Here different parts which are needed to be put together are assembled here. We were also deployed in this department. Here we use a 40kg press to assemble
some universal joint bolts together. The figure below shows two parts of universal joints before assembly and after assembly.

• INSPECTION DEPARTMENT:
• Inspection in manufacturing is conducting inspection during the production process. This approach of inspection helps to control the quality of products by helping to fix the source of defects
immediately after they are detected, and it is useful for any factory that wants to improve productivity, reduce defects rates, and reduce re-work and waste.

• GO and NOGO GUAGES

• GO and NOGO gauges refers to an inspection tool used to check a work piece against allowed to tolerances. Its name is derived from two tests
the check involves the work piece having to pass one test (GO) and fail the other (NOGO).

• Fig.6.2 GO NOGO gauges

• PLUG GAUGES
• These are also called as GO and NO GO gauges. The plug gauge is used to
check the size of a hole. The green end is the “GO”, and the red end is the
“NO GO”.

• RING GAUGE
• A ring gauges are used to measure the outside diameter of the shaft. The GO
ring gauge is of a size corresponding to the high (maximum) limit of the shaft,
while the NO GO correspond to the low (minimum) limit of the shaft.

• HEIGHT GAUGE
• A height gauge is a measuring device used either for determining the height of
the objects or for marking of items to be worked on height gauges may also be
used to measure the height of an object by using underside of the scriber as the
datum.

CHAPTER 03
TASK PERFORMED
• The internship was of four weeks and thus our task was categorized into four sections. Each week we were assigned a new task. As many students were doing their internship in this company so we got a chance to work four hours per
day in the company.
• The tasks assigned per week is mentioned as follows:
• First week- Introduction of company and machines in company.
• Second week- Study of machine behaviour and time taken for component manufacturing.
• Third week- Assembly and maintenance of components.
• Fourth week- Inspection of components.

• First week- Introduction of company and machines in company.

• Second week- Study of machine behaviour and time taken for component manufacturing.
• On the second week we were assigned the task to study the behaviour of machines. We studied what process is used in machines for manufacturing. We studied about different hydraulic systems and pressure systems. We also studied
about the behaviour of lubricants used. For almost two days we were allowed to study what process were used. The processes like jet cutting, grinding, milling etc were used.
• Later on the second phase of second week we were told to study the time taken by each machine to manufacture a component. We were given a stop clock and allowed to study the time taken by machines. We studied an average of
1 minute 32 seconds was taken to manufacture a components in a grinding machine. An average time of 2 minutes 15 seconds was taken to manufacture a component in shaping machine. But for very complex components with different
shapes the time could be minimum 5 minutes to manufacture. The components were made in batches. Thus we understood manufacturing time of components in same machine could vary according to complexity of component.

• Third week- Assembly and maintenance of components.
• On the third week we were taken to the assembly department and allowed to do assembly of some components. As seen in figure 5.2 and 5.3 there are two components first one is unassembled and second one was assembled by us. At
first day of third week we were told to observe assembly process. We observed different assembly process.
• On second day of third week we were given some universal joints components to assemble. There we were give pins to insert in the holes of component to create a universal joint. As these components were delivered to big
companies like Toyota we were told to be very carefully during assembly. There we found many components to be inappropriate thus rejected the components. All rejected components were classified into two parts one plus error and
other minus error. The plus error was plus sized then normal size and minus error was smaller then normal sized. Then that rejected parts were remade if possible. We were given a press which could produce a weight of 40 kg to force the
pins in pinholes.
• Fourth week- Inspection of components.
• The final week started and we were taken to inspection and packing department. There we first observed the workers. There we saw some gauges used to determine errors in components. We were given those gauges and were assigned
to do inspection. We worked together with the company workers. There three buckets were kept one for correct components, one for smaller sized components and last for bigger sized components. The components with error were send
for correction. There we did inspection of different valves, pins, sprockets etc. There was the packing and dispatch department where all packing jobs were done. Different codes were given to different companies.

• This is how we got hands on experience and worked in a company as an interns. Here we came across difference between theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering.
CHAPTER 04
SKILLS LEARNED
• An internship assists with career development by providing real work
experiences that provide students with opportunities to explore their interests
and develop professional skills and competencies. During internship, we are
provided with opportunities to apply what we learned in classes to actual
practice. It is experienced that we will also be challenged to examine how our
attitude, beliefs, and values influence the process.
• It was valuable time here in CENTURA PRECISSION COMPONENTS and
we learn unlimited here I have a few point I have mentioned.
• We learnt about the leadership & team work to do an effective work.
We learnt about tactics to maintain discipline & how to deal with
workers.
• We learnt how to control quality problems, defects in material, laboratory testing of a hardness of material and how to meet the demands of customers.
• We have learnt how to make a powerful team to achieve target and to solve their problems.
• We have learnt about all machining process.
• We have learnt about CNC machining process in CNC cell
• Learn how to face problems in industrial sector.
• We absorb the CAM shaft machines, small drilling machines, grinding machines, hand presser machine to assembly.

• CHAPTER 05
