This document provides a case study summary of the Chongming Cultural Activity Center in Shanghai, China. The two-story building features red oxide plaster exterior walls and white interior walls with granite stone flooring. The ground floor is designed as an open street space with a cafe, co-working space, amphitheater and offices connected by an inner courtyard. A bridge structure on the first floor visually connects activities on the ground level. Two galleries are placed on either side of the stairwell on the first floor, accessed through a corridor. The east facade becomes more porous to let sunlight into the indoor amphitheater space.

CRAFTS CENTER Chongming Cultural Activity Center
Location-Shanghai,China Area-2787.09m² Built up area: 4m² MATERIALS: • red oxide plaster for the exterior walls, • white walls on the inside • The flooring is granite stone in varied finishes forming a woven pattern MASTERPLAN: Planning: • The building is a two storied structure where the spaces become the heart of the place. • The ground floor is designed as a street with cafe, co-working space, amphitheater and office spaces as place holders connected through an inner courtyard. • in order to visually connect the first floor gallery space with the activities happening below, the double height cafe is penetrated by a bridge like structure overlooking the amphitheater. • While the inner courtyard has a balcony for the artist to sit and chat with the visitors while being connected to the spaces below. Connecting passage of two galleries Gallery • Although it is a cube from the outside, it slowly becomes more porous toward the east side where the amphitheater is located.
