CHAPTER # 5
INTRODUCTION
Consider a simple beam shown of length L
that carries a uniform load of w (N/m)
throughout its length and is held in
equilibrium by reactions R1 and R2.
Assume that the beam is cut at point C.
a distance of x from he left support and the
portion of the beam to the right of C be
removed.
• The portion removed must then be
replaced by vertical shearing force V
together with a couple M to holdthe left
portion of the bar in equilibrium under the
action of R1 and wx. The couple M is
called the resisting moment or moment
and the force V is called the resisting
shear or shear. The sign of V and M are
taken to be positive if they have the
senses indicated above
Shear Force
• Now let us consider the beam as shown in
fig 1(a) which is supporting the loads P1,
P2, P3 and is simply supported at two
points creating the reactions R1 and
R2 respectively.
• Now let us assume that the beam is to
divided into or imagined to be cut into two
portions at a section AA
• Now let us assume that the resultant of
loads and reactions to the left of AA is ‘F'
vertically upwards, and since the entire
beam is to remain in equilibrium, thus the
resultant of forces to the right of AA must
also be F, acting downwards. This forces
‘F' is as a shear force
• At any x-section of a beam, the shear
force ‘F' is the algebraic sum of all the
lateral components of the forces acting on
either side of the x-section
Bending Moment:
Bending Moment:
•  Now one can define the bending moment
to be simply as the algebraic sum of the
moments about an x-section of all the
forces acting on either side of the section

IMPORTANT POINTS FOR
DRAWING
STATICALLY DETERMINATE
BEAMS
• Statically determinate beams are those
beams in which the reactions of the
supports may be determined by the use of
the equations of static equilibrium. The
beams shown below are examples of
statically determinate beams.
