The Concept of
Leadership
THE ORIGIN OF “LEADERSHIP”
The word leader has an older pedigree – from the Old
English lædere (laydere), “one who leads”, agent noun
from lædan, ”to guide, bring forth”
The closest word in antiquity relating to leadership is the Latin
word ducere “to lead, consider, regard” and interestingly in
modern Romanian language the word for leading and leadership
is conducere.

Leadership is about
relationship building.
It means that leadership is a process of
influencing others to accomplish a task by
providing purpose, direction, and motivation.

and then lets them go. And it’s not always about a
product, technological advance or delivering results; it is
more of a human endeavor.
Four Primary
Factors
of Leadership
The Leader
The Followers
The Situation
The Communication
The Leader
must have an honest understanding of who he is,
what he knows, and what he can do
must know his personal strengths and weaknesses,
capabilities and limitations
needs to be able to discipline himself in order to lead his team effectively
acknowledges that he is never alone
it is the followers, not the
leader or someone else who
determines if the leader is
successful
it is the followers, not the
leader
If they oror someone
do not trust lack confidence inelse who
their leader, then they

uninspired. To be successful leader has toisconvince
successful
his followers, not himself or his superiors, that he is worthy of
being followed.
The Followers
Sometimes called, “the led”
the led are the people the leader is trying to bring
together as a team
the led are the people that the leader is ultimately
responsible for
The Followers
The group is defined by having three things in
common:
A common goal (shared pool of meaning)
Interdependence in achieving that goal; that is, they all need one another for success
Knowing and acting as if they have a common goal; that is, consciously responding to
their interdependence.
The Situation
All situations are different
Leadership actions that work in one situation may not
necessarily work in another
Leader must use his judgment to decide the best course of action and the leadership style
needed for each situation
Also note that the situation normally
has a greater effect on a leader's
action than his or her traits.
Also note that
the situation normally
This is because while traits may have an impressive has
stabilityaover a period
of time, theygreater effectacross
have little consistency on situations
a leader's(Mischel, 1968). Thus,
action than his or her traits.
the actions of the leader or the way he handles a situation matters more than
his traits.
The Communication
Communication is the exchange of information and
ideas from one person to another
Effective communication occurs when others understand
exactly what you are trying to tell them
Different situations call for different types of communication. The leader’s tone of voice,
choice of words and physical actions combine to affect those the leader leads.
The Communication
Communication maintains good relationship between
leader and followers as well as shows the leader
efficiency
You lead through two-way communication:
Verbal
Non-verbal
Two-ways to communicate
Verbal Non-verbal
Through the use of mouth Through written outputs, texts,
chats, or actions
