IOT – Internet of Things Sadaf Siddiqui 16AR26

“What is IoT?”
The Internet of Things, or "IoT" for short, is about
extending the power of the internet beyond computers
and smartphones to a whole range of other things,
processes, and environments.

“IoT is a system of interrelated computing devices,

mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or
people that are provided with unique identifiers and the
ability to transfer data over a network without requiring
human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.”

“In the near future Smart Home System will become as common as Internet Today, otherwise Internet Connection
Today”.
Bill Gates

What are Smart Curtains and Blinds?

Smart Curtain and blinds are window coverings that include

built-in motors that let you add remote raising or lowering
capabilities based on schedules. These blinds are also
called automatic blinds, smart shades, or automated blinds.

In some cases, smart blinds have built-in light sensors that

allow you to adjust them based on the exterior lighting.

Some smart blinds include supported integrations

with smart home systems like Apple HomeKit and Nest, while
others integrate with virtual assistants like Alexa or
your Google Assistant so they can be controlled just by your
voice.

Smart Curtains and Blinds Common Features Of Smart Curtains and Blinds

Even though there is not a standard set of features for smart blinds, these are some of the common features that you
will find in some or all of them.
• Remote control: Smart shades give you the functionality to
control them remotely, often through a remote control or a
mobile application that will allow you to open or close blinds
without direct manual input. Some of the remote controls allow
you to set timers or schedules to control when the blinds should
be open or closed.

• Built-in Motor: This is activated by the remote control, an app, or

your voice and does the actual physical work of moving blinds up
or down.

• Built-in light sensor: Some the most advanced smart blinds have a

light sensor that allows you to control the shades based on the
exterior lighting. These sensors can often be set to detect different
times of day, such as dusk or dawn.

• Virtual assistant integration: Some smart blinds support

integrations with the most common virtual assistants; making it

Why Would Anyone Want Automated Curtains and Blinds?

There are many reasons why you should automate your home in

general but, more specifically, there are good reasons for adding these
kinds of blinds to your home.

• Cost saving: Even though the cost of adding smart blinds is a little high up
front, they pay for themselves in the long run. Setting schedules or using a

built-in light sensor means you can take advantage of the exterior lighting
when needed instead of turning unnecessary lights.
• Easy access: There is no need to stand up or walk to a window to adjust your
blinds anymore, you can do it from your couch or simply by a voice
command from your virtual assistant.
• Increased Convenience: The first benefit of any Smart Home Device is
convenience. Who wouldn’t want to control or close the blinds from
wherever they are? Touch a button or pass a command, and Smart Blinds
open/close automatically. For instance, imagine you are watching a TV and
want to pull the blinds down so that you get that home theatre look. The
convenience of controlling from anywhere let you close them from a

Smartphone.

Why Would Anyone Want Automated Curtains and Blinds?

• Safety for Children and Pets: Homeowners always keep an eye on children
and pets because they tend to play with every device in the home even after

always warning them. Children easily tangle themselves with the cord, and it
risks their life. Getting rid of the chords for Smart Blinds would eliminate the
significant choking hazard and prevent the cost of repairing.
• Enhance the Security of a Smart Home: Smart Blinds are an integral part of
the security system. When scheduled and operated periodically, these create
an illusion to the burglars that the home is occupied and prevents thefts.
Some shades are connected to alarms so that you will get alerts or
notifications when someone tries to enter when you are not home.
• Protects the interior from Sun: UV rays are harmful to artwork, floor,

furniture, and even to the people who live. By scheduling them to close
automatically can protect the above things from harmful sun rays.
• Sorted Privacy Concerns: A home is where you feel safe, feel loved to make
memories, and enjoy some privacy. Windows, unfortunately, a place where
other people can see through, and this shouldn’t affect our privacy. With
smart shades, you can predefine them to lower at dusk and raise at dawn or
vice-versa- as per the convenience.

How do Smart Blinds and Curtains work?

Smart Blinds and shades work in either of the ways. It is

available as motorized blinds or retrofit, which can be
used to current windows and shades. When it is set up
within the screens, it doesn’t alter the entire appeal and
is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple
HomeKit.

Some are battery-powered, which comes with a wand

with a set of batteries that are connected to the motor.
Some of the Smart Blind systems provide a remote
control that operates on a radio frequency. This needs to
be integrated into a Smart Hub and can control blinds
remotely. All you need is a smartphone or voice to control
the windows coverings, blinds, shades, etc.
